"Zootopia" earned a whopping $73.7 million this weekend at the domestic box office, surpassing early projections and scoring the biggest opening of any Walt Disney Animation Studios movie. Yes, even "Frozen," which debuted in 2013 with $67.4 million.
This actually marks the fourth weekend of global release for "Zootopia," which kicked off its theatrical run Feb. 10 in Belgium. The film brought in another $63.4 million overseas, for a worldwide weekend haul of $137.1 million. That brings the film's total to date to about $232.5 million.
The animated family film was trailed distantly in North America by the R-rated action sequel "London Has Fallen," which took in $21.7 million in its first weekend. "Deadpool" slipped from the top spot to No. 3 with $16.4 million, followed by Tina Fey's "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" with $7.6 million, and Alex Proyas' "Gods of Egypt" with just $5 million (that brings the big-budget fantasy's two-week total to $22.8 million).
