Zombieland Director To Take On The Mob In Gangster Squad

Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is staying in LA for his new project, but swapping the undead for some made men and the cops who tried to catch them, in Warner Bros.' anticipated Gangster Squad.

Adapted from a series of LA Times articles about a special police unit from the 1940s created with the specific aim of keeping the east coast Mafia out of the city, Squad had become a hot property for directors in recent months, with Darren Aronofsky and Crazy Heart's Scott Cooper both rumored to be attached at times. As the Hollywood Reporter notes, Fleischer's announcement marks a shift away from the comedies he's worked on previously.

It's still unknown whether Fleischer will choose to make Squad next, or whether Columbia's Zombieland sequel will take priority.
