The new face of Ariel in Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid might be none other than the celebrated young actress Zendaya.

Thanks to the success of their previous live-action reimaginings of animated classics, such as Beauty and the Beast (2017) and The Jungle Book (2016), Disney has numerous other live-action remakes in the pipeline. Those include Dumbo, to be released in 2019, and others following, like The Lion King, Mulan and Lady and the Tramp.

The original animated The Little Mermaid (1989) is an especially beloved piece of Disney's canon, and it looks like the remake will be pulling out all the stops to do it justice. Lin-Manuel Miranda will reportedly be teaming up with Alan Menken to handle adapting the iconic music from the original, as well as penning a handful of new songs. Rob Marshall is said to be the director, using a script written by Jane Goldman.

According to That Hashtag Show, the coveted lead role has been offered to Zendaya, who is best known to Marvel fans as fan-favorite Michelle Jones in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Her character, originally rumored to be named Mary Jane, ended up as something of a stealth love interest for Peter Parker by taking on the nickname M.J.
