Zazie Beetz instantly became a fan-favorite with her scene-stealing performance as the probability altering mutant Domino in this year's Deadpool 2 but the actor was originally up to play a different mutant in an earlier X-Men film.
While speaking at a spotlight panel at ACE Comic-Con in Chicago this weekend, Beetz was asked what other Marvel character she'd like to play. The actor then revealed she had auditioned to play Storm for 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse before the part ultimately went to Alexandra Shipp.
"When I was a kid, I remember, in terms of characters, people would always be like, ‘You should be Storm.’ I auditioned for young Storm, actually, and I didn’t get it," explained Beetz. "Growing up I always had an association with her. I mean, obviously, because being a young black woman, that was the one I associated with. But I think that would have been a little fantasy of mine to do that and sort of a nostalgic thing for me to try. So yeah, I’d say Storm."
Shipp reprised her role as Storm in a brief, silent cameo in Deadpool 2 though she didn't share any scenes with Beetz's Domino. In the meantime, Beetz is the middle of principal photography for Todd Phillips' upcoming Joker origin film.
David Leitch’s Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular Deadpool, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, Zazie Beetz as Domino, Julian Dennison as Russell, and Josh Brolin as Cable. An alternate PG-13 rated cut of the film is scheduled to be released on December 21.
