Having originally been pitched as another entry in the Star Wars franchise, Snyder ultimately retooled the story of Rebel Moon to fit within its own universe. The narrative will follow Kora (Sofia Boutella), a "young woman with a mysterious past," as she embarks on a journey to find help in repelling the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. In doing so, she will put together a team of battle-hardened warriors that will need to work together to liberate her homeworld.

Rebel Moon's Prospective Future

Snyder has openly acknowledged his hopes for Rebel Moon, noting that the transition away from Star Wars has allowed him to full develop his own universe influenced by his own inspirations. "This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan," Snyder said. "It's my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out." The filmmaker further acknowledged that he's spent two years building out the world of Rebel Moon.

As for the movie's cast, audiences can expect to see a wealth of major actors stepping into brand-new roles. Beyond Hounsou and Boutella, Rebel Moon also features Charlie Hunnam, Ed Skrein, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, Corey Stoll, Anthony Hopkins and Cary Elwes.

While many of the involved actors have praised Snyder's vision for Rebel Moon, the production wasn't as smooth for some members of the cast. Hunnam recently acknowledged that he incurred several severe injuries while shooting the sci-fi epic, some of which will plague him for months. "I have a totally exploded S1 [areas that effect the hips and groin] and S2 [the back of the thighs] that are torn wide open, a hundred percent dehydrated," Hunnam said. "It’s going to take two years to heal, and I have a 40 percent tear on the ligament on the right side that holds my spinal column in place."

Rebel Moon premieres on Netflix on Dec. 22.
