Director Zack Snyder shared details with fans about who Superman could square off against in a standalone sequel to his 2013 film Man of Steel.

"We talked about a Brainiac movie," Snyder told Brobible, focusing on cosmic enemies as opposed to mortal ones. "I do think that the Kryptonians that are in the Phantom Zone are probably still around. And there was always a possibility for their return. Faora and whoever’s left. That was a thing that was always out there that we talked about as a possible sequel."

Snyder continued, "I just think it’s best to give Superman these extraterrestrial challenges because I think you’ve got to be careful with -- other than Lex Luthor, because, of course, you have to continue with Lex, because Lex is his real nemesis -- but I think you really have to look outside of the Earth for challenges for him because of how powerful he is."

Henry Cavill's version of Superman premiered in Man of Steel in 2013. Cavil reprised his role in subsequent DC Extended Universe's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. In the years since Cavil took on the superhero role, rumors about a standalone follow-up to Man of Steel have circulated.

It's currently unclear if Man of Steel 2 will materialize or what future Cavill has in the DCEU. In May 2020, Cavill signed on to appear in multiple DCEU projects, though no solo films were mentioned. Recent news about a Superman movie from screenwriter Ta-Nehisi Coates starring a whole new version of Superman has put Cavill's future DCEU role into question.
