Zack Snyder's Justice League is set to expand upon many details from the film's original cut, including the character of Batman and an iconic scene from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

According to Snyder, the movie will further contextualize the dream sequence from Batman and Superman's first crossover. With the additional scenes shot for the film, including some containing Jared Leto's Joker, audiences will be able to better understand the conflict between the hero and his nemesis. "The scene explains why Bruce had the Joker card taped to his gun that you see in Batman v Superman," Snyder told Vanity Fair.

The vision of a future in which Earth loses to Darkseid's invasion, often nicknamed the "Knightmare," depicted Batman wielding a gun with a Joker playing card strapped to it. Another clue to the rivals' history was the display of Robin's armor, defaced by spray paint that read "Ha Ha, Joke’s On You, Batman." Regarding the hinted demise of Batman's sidekick, Snyder remarked "I’d always wanted to explore the death of Robin."

Snyder does not believe he will get the chance to depict the history between the characters in another movie. "And if there ever was going to be a next movie, which, of course, there probably won’t be, I wanted to do a thing where in flashbacks we learn how Robin died, how Joker killed him and burned down Wayne Manor, and that whole thing that happened between he and Bruce," he said. It was his intent to eventually show "how they became like this ... how he hurt him in a way that no one has, really. Other than losing his parents, it was probably the most significant personal injury to his life."
