It turns out the physical inspiration for Apokolips general Granny Goodness in Zack Snyder's Justice League came from the unlikeliest of sources.

When asked during a Justice Con interview if he wanted any specific actor to play Granny in future movies, Snyder stated that casting her would "be kind of like being cast off a drawing." He revealed that her final character model was based off of a "Weta artist's aunt," explaining, "The Weta artist who was making it, I kind of said, 'That's what... I'd love her to look like this, what JoJo drew,' and he goes, 'okay, that looks like my aunt!' And I think he just kind of based it on that."

The Justice Con hosts tried to pitch Snyder some of their personal choices to play Granny, which included Kim Rhodes, Helen Mirren and Dame Judi Dench. In response to Mirren's theoretical casing, Snyder mentioned that he previously collaborated with her on his 2010 animated film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, reminiscing how "you got to hang out with her in the booth for a while and she did... she was, as advertised, amazing."

Though Granny Goodness only received a non-speaking, uncredited cameo in Justice League, the Female Furies trainer has previously appeared in numerous DC animated shows. She was most notably voiced by Ed Asner in Superman: The Animated SeriesJustice League Unlimited and the animated movie Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, with other voice actors including Jessica Walter in Harley Quinn and Deborah Strang in Young Justice: Outsiders. Granny also made a live-action appearance in The CW's Smallville, played by Christine Willes.

Streaming now on HBO Max, Zack Snyder's Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ray Porter as Darkseid, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon.
