Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League director Zack Snyder recently posted a cryptic image on social media, sparking a lot of enthusiastic discussion online about what it could mean and whether or not it signals his return to Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe, with certain parts of it affectionally named the SnyderVerse.
On social media, Snyder posted an image of a clapperboard with the Justice League logo on it. In the background, viewers could see an image of Wonder Woman in front of a band of soldiers-- an image used in Zack Snyder's Justice League. No caption accompanied the post, leaving viewers to speculate as to the meaning of the image.
What fans refer to as the SnyderVerse is comprised of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the recently released Zack Snyder's Justice League. 2017's Justice League originally had Snyder attached, but the director was forced to step down due to a family tragedy and was ultimately replaced on the project by director Joss Whedon. Snyder's script underwent dramatic rewrites and the film saw major reshoots. The film was a box office failure and resulted in unhappy fans calling for the release of Zack Snyder's original vision.
After several years of #ReleasetheSnyderCut petitions and support from Justice League stars, HBO Max provided Snyder with the funds and means to complete his original cut of Justice League, which required new scenes to be shot during the height of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The film was released on March 18, 2021 on HBO Max to notable success.
It introduced a number of characters that were absent from the theatrical release, including Darkseid, Joker and Martian Manhunter. Furthermore, the film expanded greatly on certain arcs, including Steppenwolf's arrival on Earth and his motivations. Zack Snyder's Justice League is not part of the current canon of the DCEU, though Snyder has said in the past that, if Warner Bros. were to continue with the SnyderVerse, he knows where the Justice League sequels would go.
The success of Zack Snyder's Justice League appears to have caused major shifts in Warner Bros.' film slate regarding the DCEU. Ava DuVernay's New Gods project, for example, was canceled some time after the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League. While DuVernay never cited the film specifically, she has previously said, "I loved New Gods, which is the project that got axed. The studio decided that they did not want to pursue a certain part of that comic world based on some things that were going on with another film in that world, so before I even was able to kind of complete my script with Tom King, they axed it."
