Snyder was originally attached to helm Justice League, but was forced to step away from the project due to a personal tragedy and was replaced by director Joss Whedon during post-production. The film underwent a number of rewrites following the negative reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and saw two months of reshoots. This led to a variety of issues, such as the highly-criticized use of digital effects in order to remove actor Henry Cavill's mustache, which he required for Mission: Impossible -- Fallout. The version of Justice League released in theaters possessed a distinctly lighter tone than Snyder's previous work and a shorter runtime.

Reports of the behind-the-scenes issues, coupled with later discussions concerning Snyder's original intentions for the film led to calls for a remake, led to the #ReleasetheSnyderCut social media movement -- a movement later supported by some of the film's stars, including actors Jason Momoa and Ben Affleck. In May 2020, Snyder and HBO Max announced that a director's cut will be released, as Snyder explained that his Justice League only required visual effects work to be completed.
