Make sure to draw a full hand of cards, because it’s time to talk about card games! It’s a little ridiculous that card games are so popular in the Yu-Gi-Oh world that they have their own high schools devoted to them, but that’s precisely what Yu-Gi-Oh! GX did.

Duelist Academy was meant to show off who was the best of the best. But not everyone there was amazing. While the school was split into three different levels, that doesn’t mean everyone in the Obelisk Blue dorm was automatically the truth. This list takes a look at both the five strongest and the five weakest students at Duel Academy. Who paid attention, and who was a complete scrub?

10 WEAK: REGINALD VAN HOWELL III

About a third into the series, we meet Reggie Van Howell III, also known as “Mr. Elite.” We see Reggie a grand total of one time, as he decides to test Chazz Princeton to determine if he’s skilled enough to return to the Obelisk Blue dorm rooms.

He’s supposed to be the top-ranking freshman of the second year, but we only see him in a single duel, and he loses. This is fine, as he exists solely to be development for Chazz, but he also kind of sucks. He builds the most generic Warrior deck possible, puts a few equip spells in it, and calls it a day.  When was the last time someone seriously used Marauding Captain, after all?

9 STRONGEST: SYRUS TRUESDALE

Syrus was a true example of growth over time. Everyone around him basically started as OP, but Syrus simply kept his head down, took the tests, and won the tough battles. His brother Zane never seemed to believe in him, but Syrus never let that keep him from continuing to grow.

He went from an Osiris Red, to a Ra Yellow, to an Obelisk Blue duelist over the course of the series, and actually had a realistic record by the end of it all, finishing 7-7. As for his deck, it’s hard not to respect the Vehicroids—they did what they had to, and eventually, he upgraded into Cyberdark Vehicroid, which even Zane admitted meant he’d surpassed him.

8 WEAKEST: CHUMLEY HUFFINGTON

Chumley sucks. He’s a nice dude with a very sweet design, but if anyone’s looking for dueling skill, they should definitely go elsewhere. When we first meet him, he’s an Osiris Red duelist who was forced to redo his freshman year because he failed the first time around.

He’s never promoted to another duelist hall (unlike Jaden, who seems to turn them down), and we literally never see him win a duel. But despite this, Chumley’s offered a job by Pegasus to work at Industrial Illusions and design cards. Now why someone who can’t play the game gets to design cards is a mystery, but he still takes a win home on his own.

7 STRONGEST: ZANE TRUESDALE

Zane wanted to be the best a little too much for his own good. He’s the first person Jaden goes up against that he not only can’t beat, but he can barely even touch. Zane and his Cyber Dragon deck are presented as the epitome of power, and even their rematch ends in a draw.

But when he gets crushed by Aster Phoenix, he goes from master of the Cyber Dragons to going for the Cyberdarks, becoming even more deadly than before. In the end, Zane has about as many victories as someone like Jaden or Chazz, refusing to give in to his own weakness.

6 WEAKEST: ATTICUS RHODES

Alexis’ brother Atticus is supposedly meant to be an extremely talented duelist. He was originally a close friend of Zane’s, who probably wouldn’t even give his name to a duelist he considered weak. Though the character spends most of his time possessed by Nightshade, that makes it even worse.

Nightshroud is supposed to be a powerful duelist who’s cold and ruthless, yet he’s constantly getting beaten. In the end, his only two wins are off-screen, and whenever we see him he’s just taking consistent L’s, even though he has the far better supported at the time Red-Eyes Black Dragon deck.

5 STRONGEST: CHAZZ PRINCETON

Chazz is a man who knew what it was to stand at the top...then get knocked down. When he first appeared, he was someone that only knew how to respect the most powerful cards. After transferring to a different school, he began to realize that all cards have their place. He learned how to win duels just by putting together whatever he could find.

Chazz experiences the most changes to his deck—he runs multiple different types of decks during the series, eventually settling on a deck that combined several of his previous decks together. It worked out well for him, as Chazz winds up eventually having one of the best win-loss records of all time.

4 WEAKEST: BLAIR FLANNIGAN

One of the youngest members of the crew and one of the few people who joined the Osiris Red, Blair doesn’t have a terribly good track record with duels. She runs something like three different decks during the series, including such genius ideas as a “love” deck and a “token” deck.

She’s got five duels across her time in the series, and during that time her only victories are in tag duels against characters that don’t even matter. The moment she goes against someone who matters, it’s almost an instant loss.

3 STRONGEST: ASTER PHOENIX

Okay, let’s talk about this before anything else: Aster whooped Jaden so bad, Jaden couldn’t even see his cards anymore. That alone is enough to land him on this list. But also, Aster was strong before he reached the Academy. He was a professional, top-ranked duelist who was considered on the level of Yugi and Seto.

His Destiny Hero deck allows him to manipulate the phases of the game to grant abilities he wouldn’t usually have access to. It helps to have some of the best boss monsters in the game at the time as well—no one wants to run into Destiny Hero Dogma or Destiny End Dragoon.

2 WEAKEST: BASTION MISAWA

Bastion Misawa

Bastion is supposed to be the truth, but honestly, what’s his record say? He’s got five losses and three wins throughout the series, which isn’t great all things considered. Plus, he’s meant to be this duelist with a genius-level intellect but is too much of a dope to realize he’ll never beat Jaden, so he’s trapped in Ra Yellow forever.

Probably what makes this the worst though, is that he has seven different decks, and not one of them was able to overcome Neo-Spacian Grand Mole. There’s no creativity to his deck-building, and the only thing we ever see are his water and earth decks.

1 STRONGEST: JADEN YUKI

Is there really any question who the best duelist on this list is? Of course, we remember some of Jaden’s big losses, but what people should really remember is that he wins, often. Yeah, Aster made him start to see white when he looked at the Elemental Heroes.

So he created a new set of cards in the Neo-Spacians and proceeded to continue kicking everyone’s butt around. The versatility of the Heroes is so great that even today, the deck is feared, and he could stand toe to toe with any other protagonist.
