The Battle City arc of Yu-Gi-Oh is one of the best in the entire series, hands down. It's a ton of fun, and the twists and turns that take place keep fans on the edge of their seats always.

However, that doesn't mean that it is all good. In fact, there are plenty of things about Battle City that really don't make any sense when you think about them. Today we'll be going over just 10 of those things. Let's jump right into the list with a bizarre restriction that makes no sense in the grand scheme of things.

10 Fusion Monster Restriction

Blye-Eyes Ultimate Dragon in the anime

Among the new rules added to the Battle City tournament is an extraordinary one that rules that fusion monsters cannot attack the turn they are summoned... why? There's even a brand new card that is made that allows players to bypass this restriction. It's just a very weird mechanic that didn't add anything to duels. If anything, it slowed them down. It's not the strangest entry on the list, but it is odd nonetheless.

9 How Is A Duelist's Rating Decided

Seto with his Duel Disk

To enter Kaiba's tournament, you need to have a duelist ranking that is high enough to be given a Duel Disk. It's shown in the anime that Joey doesn't have a high enough ranking to be entered. Why would this be the case? He had participated in two tournaments in the past, even managing to place second in the Duelist Kingdom. If that's not enough to earn a Duel Disk, then what is?

8 No One Mentions Noah

Noah next to KaibaCorp

Sure, Noah's Virtual World is a filler arc, but it's absolutely ridiculous that no one in the Battle City finals ever brings him or the mess he caused back up again once that is over and done with. Not once. Even Marik, who couldn't figure out where everyone had gone and was clearly angry, didn't bring it up again. A filler arc is a filler arc, but you can't just sit there and pretend that it didn't happen. It definitely did.

7 Kaiba Uses Blue-Eyes As A Weapon

Battle City Yugi vs Joey/Marik

In Yugi and Joey's mind-control duel, Kaiba manages to save Tea, who had a crate dangling over her head that could fall any minute, by using his Blue-Eyes to knock the controller out of a Rare Hunter's hand. Insane.

This man straight up threw a 2-ounce card at someone, it somehow flew straight at him from a far distance, and it worked. The man dropped the controller. Besides the fact that absolutely none of that makes sense, why would Kaiba risk one of his rarest cards for that maneuver? Use like, Graceful Charity or something. You've got plenty of those.

6 Why Is There So Much Cheating

YuGiOh Espa Roba

In three of Joey's duels, he faces cheating from Espa Roba, Weevil Underwood, and Seeker. Three times this happens. If Joey alone experiences this so often, it could be assumed that there was far more cheating than the viewers saw. How does a tournament of this size not receive more regulation?

5 Why Doesn't Marik Just Take What He Wants?

It is explained that Marik has to defeat Atem in a duel to win his Millenium Puzzle. Sure, that makes sense. So why doesn't he, rather than risking his two God Cards in separate duels, steal Obelisk, and then challenge Yugi with all three in his deck? There was no reason that he should have separated Slifer and Ra the way he did. This made all of the duels easier for Yugi, who managed to triumph and defeat Marik in the end.

4 How Did Joey And Yugi Tie In Their Duel

Yugi taking on Joey

Once Yugi loses his duel against Marik/Joey, Joey is freed from his mind control and just sort of... decides that Meteor of Destruction has another effect that makes Red-Eyes attack Joey. Thus, both key boxes are opened, and with a little help from Serenity, both duelists can survive. Except for the fact that Meteor of Destruction does not have that ability, and Yugi already lost, so there was no reason that Joey should have been able to win in general.

3 Serenity Saving Joey

Serenity Diving After Joey Cropped

On that note, how in the world did Serenity manage to save Joey? She had taken off her bandages seconds before diving straight into the sea to save her brother. Besides the fact that her eyes wouldn't have been able to adjust that quickly in general, keeping them open in the water isn't going to help anything at all. Someone else probably should have done this.

2 Mai's Defeat

Mai playing the Winged Dragon of Ra

Mai should have beaten Marik, straight up. The Winged Dragon of Ra card magically transforming to include a chant right after she played it is one of the worst plot armor uses in plot armor history. There was simply no reason that Mai should have lost to Marik, but alas, only the main protagonist can take the villain down.

1 Joey Should Have, Too

Marik Ishtar laughing in Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Oh, Joey should have too. That whole not being able to call a final attack so he lost the duel should have never happened. Marik is one of many that should have been disqualified from the finals for using Shadow Games in general, and the fact that Joey lost to a technicality is just silly. Marik isn't that strong of a duelist.
