Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens was recently announced at Jump Festa 2019, with the first-released trailer showing the familiar formula of a primary group of characters and a new twist on the duel monster system. Similar to its predecessors, Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens contains a new summoning system, but the protagonist is set to make a big splash in the series.

Series protagonist Yuga Oudou, voiced by Hiiro Ishibashi, is a fifth-grade student living in the future town of Gōha. From the trailer, we can tell he is a bright and energetic child that has a passion for dueling. Yuga is also innovative, with his enthusiasm for duel monsters only matched by his inventions. As much as Yuga loves dueling, he's frustrated by how cramped the dueling system played by adults is.

With his new invention called “Road,” Yuga is determined to create a version of duel monsters that kids can enjoy while also solving the tight space issue. Another significant character in the show is Tatsuhisa Kamijo (Luke), voiced by Taku Yashiro, who is the “number one duelist at Gōha 7 Elementary School” and is Yuga's partner in introducing the Road system. Other new characters include the student council president Gakuto Sogetsu, voiced by Natsuki Hanae, and Yuga's classmate Romin Kirishima, voiced by Tomori Kusunoki.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens

Similar to previous Yu-Gi-Oh! series, the dueling is done using an advanced summoning system attached at the arm. However, this system appears to be smaller and less bulky and morphs into the shape of the number seven when opened, hence the new show's title. The anime will also introduce “Rush Duels,” which will feature the season’s new rules and regulations to the beloved card game.

The main new monster featured in Yuga's deck is the Seventh Road Magician, which gives a nod to the series' original Dark Magician. However, the trailer for the new series also features the well-known Blue-Eyes White Dragon, which has made many appearances throughout the franchise.

There are a lot of big names behind the new anime, including Nobuhiro Kondo as director, who has several famous anime under his belt, including all four seasons of Sgt. Frog. Toshimitsu Takeuchi is in charge of the scripts, who also did work on Saint Seiya: Soul of Fold, eIDLIVE, while Masahiro Hikokubu is overseeing the duel layout. In addition, Kazuki Tadano and Hiromi Matsushita are on character designs, while Hiroshi Yamamoto is the sound director. These anime veterans are working together at studio Bridge to make this anime a success, which is a change from the previous seasons being at Gallop.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens will mark the 20th anniversary of the anime franchise, making this a very significant installment. This is made even more apparent by Konami, the company behind it, stating “the history of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime series will change.”

This statement could nod to the aspects that already makes Sevens unique from its predecessors. The primary one being that Sevens is the first in the franchise to feature an elementary school-aged protagonist whereas the previous iterations of the character have been high schoolers, or at least aged of high school student age.

Age discrepancy clearly plays a big role in the series, which could also take the anime's plot in an interesting direction. For example, being taken seriously as a duelist when the character is significantly younger than adult or teenage competitors. With the primary premise being about Yuga changing the dueling status quo, it would definitely put him in conflict with the surrounding adults.

Whatever the change may be, Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens is set to be a unique addition to the franchise. It's set to appear in April 2020 on TV Tokyo and its affiliated channels.
