It's been almost 20 years since Yu-Gi-Oh! made its grand debut in 1999 -- or 2000 for North America -- and changed the world of anime and card games forever. Although Yugi Moto gets most of the love from the crowd because he is the undisputed main character of the original show, it's Seto Kaiba who's on our minds at the moment. The broody antihero we all love to hate fills a common (yet very important) archetypal role throughout the first series, and it's one that has been used heavily within teen-based media -- probably because the bad boy is always such a fan favorite.

Considered selfish because of his egocentricity and arrogance, Seto is perceived as always looking out for himself at the expense of those around him. Sound familiar? His prodigious genius with technology sets him up to ruthlessly take over KaibaCorp and become one of the most powerful people in the series. But there are a few instances where he chooses to help Yugi. Admittedly it is mostly in situations that benefit him or times when they share a common enemy, but hey, that teamwork has still got to count for something.

His role as the antihero balances out Yugi's role as the archetypal hero, with him serving as the dark side of the moon, so to speak. Seto's obsession with becoming the world's greatest Duel Monsters player -- at the price of Yugi's downfall -- his calm, cool, collected demeanor and his superiority complex all come together to remind us of another brooding baddie.

And who is that baddie you may ask? We're talking about the pale, bleach blonde and seemingly unredeemable, Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter series. A classic fictional rich kid with too much angst and not enough affection. Unlike Seto, who finessed his way into being adopted alongside his brother into the prominent Kaiba family by winning a chess match against his adoptive father, Draco is born into his privilege.

But both Seto and Draco wield their status like a weapon. The only problem is, Draco doesn't have a rags-to-riches sob story to humanize him in the eyes of the audience, and he spends six and a half films being hated because of his apparent lack of redeeming qualities. But, even without a tragic backstory, the similarities between the two characters can't be denied. Both are bullies, have enemies that are considered to be the hero of their respective series'. And both believe that their intellect and status make them superior to everyone around them, and their loyalty seems to be only to themselves.

Well, for the most part. Seto does let it slip every now and again that his love for his brother Mokuba is the most important thing in his life. He also has a soft spot for orphans because of his time spent living in an orphanage as a kid -- even going so far as to tell his adoptive father that his goal after taking over KaibaCorp is to build an amusement park called Kaiba Land specifically for underprivileged children. There is never a similar moment of humanization with Draco. The most Potter fans get from his character progression is that he is only reluctantly following the Dark Lord's orders and it was never his personal choice to join the Death Eater's ranks.

That doesn't make him a good person, but it definitely puts him closer to being good than bad. Malfoy is decidedly on his own side, whereas Seto seems like he's only out for himself, but in reality, he has at least one person he'd risk it all for. He may be a true blue baddie or just a damaged soul with a bad attitude. Either way, Seto Kaiba is a fan favorite because he gives the audience something that we all crave: A bad boy with a good heart.
