WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Young Justice: Phantoms, streaming now on HBO Max.

In Young Justice: Phantoms, one of the season's most shocking arcs has revolved around Beast Boy. Gar's been in a depressive state since Superboy's death -- something not even Miss Martian can help with because she's also broken after losing her soulmate. However, just when fans think the new Outsiders can help Gar work through his issues back home in Hollywood, they display a major flaw, and the fallout could be deadly.

In the past, Blue Devil has had to address Gar's lack of duty, his constant tendency to nap, and how he's not doing chores. However, he could have sensed that it wasn't laziness -- Gar was suffering mental trauma because he was present when Superboy got killed, and that's not even mentioning him seeing Geo-Force kill and abandon the crew last season.

As it stands, none of Gar's teammates are showing compassion or empathy towards him. Wonder Girl, El Dorado and Stargirl all come off as uncaring in "Teg Ydaer!" by insisting he joins them for missions. They also ream him for once again sleeping in, not even trying to get to the bottom of why he's still in pain. Sure, the missions are important, but Gar not hearing the alarm or sleeping through it should not warrant condemnation. There are other teammates to choose from, so it feels like the group just wants to keep up appearances, get in the good graces from the media and get the approval of the Justice League seniors.

It paints a robotic, cold and emotionless picture of the Outsiders, which doesn't bode well for the future, as it may result in the new breed transforming into Batman-like heroes who are all about the job and not the human undertaking the task. And what makes things even worse is that lack of camaraderie aside, there is an ominous shot at the end of the episode that shows Gar using sleeping pills.

In fact, Gar takes a lot of them, and despite his phone buzzing, he isn't waking up. This hints that if he continues to do this to induce heavy sleeping sessions, he may end up with complications. At this point, Gar doesn't have that sense of family he used to, and with all these red flags being ignored, it feels like another tragedy is looming with the teens being more interested in saving the world than one of their own.

See how the new Outsiders are failing a Gar in need in Young Justice: Phantoms, streaming now on HBO Max.
