This article contains spoilers for Young Justice: Phantoms, Episode 22, "Rescue and Search," streaming now on HBO Max.

The recent Young Justice: Phantoms episode, “Rescue and Search,” sees Nightwing and Zatanna gathering multiple members of the original Young Justice team in an attempt to rescue Superboy from the Phantom Zone. Should this be how the series ends, it would create a sort of symmetry with how the series began. The show's first story arc featured Robin, Aqualad and Kid Flash infiltrating Cadmus labs and rescuing Superboy.

Series creator Greg Weisman has talked about how he and the other writers don’t have a definitive end in mind for the series. They’re happy to keep things going, it seems, but they know that when end comes, it can’t possibly satisfy everyone. The story will keep going until it doesn’t. However, if they were to try to send Young Justice off into the sunset in the most narratively complete manner possible, they could do worse than to bring together members of the long-separated Season 1 team for a mission to reclaim a lost family member.

Each story arc of Young Justice: Phantoms has centered on characters who have been around since Season 1. The first arc followed Superboy, Miss Martian and Beast Boy, the second followed Artemis, the third followed Zatanna, the fourth followed Kaldur’ahm, the fifth followed Rocket and the sixth appears to be following Nightwing. By reestablishing these core characters, the season looks to be building toward a reunited original team and an attempt to save Conner. The end, as they say, is in the beginning.

The Cadmus rescue that comprised Young Justice’s first story arc way back in 2010 featured founding team members Dick Grayson, Kaldur’ahm and Wally West. While Dick and Kaldur have grown into adult heroes who are much better equipped to save Conner than their adolescent selves, Wally has had no such opportunity, having died in the Season 2 finale. Following Wally’s apparent death, Bart Allen, formerly Impulse, took up the Kid Flash mantle. Given that Bart has joined up with members of the Legion of Superheroes for a separate Superboy rescue mission, it would make sense for him to fill in for his fallen predecessor when the two missions inevitably combine.

On the other hand, the finality of Wally’s death has always felt ambiguous. Like previous speedsters and other versions of the character, this Wally “died” by disappearing into the Speed Force. Although not always, trips into the Speed Force often come with hard won return tickets. Wally’s resurrection could, in fact, be the last piece the Team needs to rescue Conner from both the Phantom Zone and whatever lingering Zone sickness might be clouding his judgment. Kid Flash was instrumental the first time the team rescued Superboy. Perhaps he will be this time, as well.

Since the beginning of Young Justice: Phantoms, Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti have been up front about the fact that they don’t know if the series will continue for further seasons. Despite their insistence that the story "never ends," it could be possible that the creators decided to hedge their bets with a season finale that could function as a series finale if a renewal doesn’t come their way. In that event, a final arc that features all the original team members, mirrors the Team’s founding mission and showcases the characters’ growth over the years would be the perfect way to do so. The ideal conclusion may not be possible, but with Young Justice: Phantoms, Weisman and Vietti seem to be giving it their best shot.

New episodes of Young Justice: Phantoms air Thursdays on HBO Max.
