WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for "Overwhelmed," the penultimate episode of Young Justice: Outsiders, streaming now on DC Universe.

Season 3 of Young Justice continuously raised the stakes for its heroes, from the budding Outsiders to the Justice League themselves as they tried to stop the metahuman trafficking ring led by Darkseid, Vandal Savage and Granny Goodness.

Throughout all of those adventures, the lingering presence of the late Wally West, Kid Flash, cast a shadow over the entire series. He died at the end of the Invasion arc in Season 2 when his essence dissipated while stopping bombs set up by the Light and the Reach.

Now, Young Justice: Outsiders has found a crafty way to 'resurrect him in the penultimate episode, "Overwhelmed," so he can help one of the team's key members look towards the future with hope and optimism.

This aptly-titled episode focuses on Artemis, the lover Wally left behind, on Valentine's Day as she struggles with feelings for Will, her brother-in-law and Roy Harper's clone, while they grew closer after babysitting baby Lian for so long. She feels guilty for kissing him and immediately convenes with Zatanna to try to get her to bring Wally's soul back, even if it's just for a day.

Zatanna brings Miss Martian along for the meeting, urging Artemis to forget this idea because it's not only unethical, such magic will have dire repercussions. Nevertheless, she sends Artemis' soul to Limbo, and the insistent archer meets Wally for a tear-filled reunion. They reminisce about the past as time is slowed down in this realm, basically reliving their life together from the very first moment. Artemis experiences the love they lost and also, how it would be like living together as a married couple, even becoming pregnant in this paradise dimension. But Wally himself tells her it's time to go when the sun sets as she can't stay here forever -- as she'll lose herself.

Her friends come to get her, but Artemis is adamant she's not going back, only for Wally to ask her what's the gender or name of the kid. She can't recall, and so she realizes this isn't real, which allows her to open up to Wally like never just so she could move on. His spirit tells her it's okay to pursue a life of love without him, and she returns to the land of the living, filled with closure. The big twist, though, comes when Zatanna secretly admits to Bumblebee (who also came along) that this Limbo was all a mental construct that she and Miss Martian conjured. They combined their powers to build the space, and Artemis filled it with her thoughts and desires. It's also the second time Wally popped up this season after Nightwing hallucinated him on the Orphanage, so clearly his old teammates can't get over losing him.

That said, this plan is dishonest and raises some ethical questions about the League tampering with someone's mind, especially Miss Martian. Admittedly, this has the honorable goal of essentially giving therapy to a friend, and there's no permanent damage since this is apparently Artemis' sub-conscious manifesting as she does want to move on. No one tricked her into thinking something per se, she's just following her heart and soul, although she does tell a heartbroken Will she has too much baggage and can't embark on this journey with him.

Still, she has a new chapter to live with the League and Outsiders expanding under Black Lightning;s leadership. Still, Wally might not be gone for good, since his essence may have been sucked into the Speed Force. There's still some realistic hopes that the wise-cracking speedster might still be alive somewhere, trying to return to the woman he loves.
