Young Justice is one of DC's best animated shows. With great characters, an overarching story that drives the whole show (with plots that last for full seasons), and villains that are worth dreading, it quickly became a fan favorite series. Unfortunately, it was canceled after season two because it wasn't selling enough toys for Cartoon Network. Thankfully, DC has heard our anguished cries, and Young Justice has been picked up for a third season in the form of Young Justice: Outsiders. Debuting solely on the DC Universe streaming service, it also removes the fear that it could be canceled again for not selling enough toys. With DC now in the captain's chair, it seems that we'll finally get a proper ending (or continuation) to the show.

Part of what makes the show such a popular story is that the characters are extremely well-written and developed. Everything from the initial few heroes starting the team to wondering where their allegiances lie, each moment feels earned and like it serves the story. Developments aren't there to incite useless conflict or to set up other stories. While the members of the Young Justice team are all superheroes, they're (mostly) human and have very understandable struggles and motivations. That said, there are a few characters that don't add a lot to the team's dynamic. While they're not bad characters, per se, their presence (or lack thereof) doesn't affect the team very much. With that in mind, continue to see our picks for the 10 best Young Justice members (and 10 we could live without).

20 BEST - NIGHTWING

young-justice-nightwing

One of the original founders of Young Justice was Dick Grayson. Starting his entry into the team as a youthful Robin, his age caused them to elect Aqualad as the leader. However, when Aqualad was spending time with Black Manta, Dick took over, as most of the team thought he was the natural-born leader anyway.

We don't often see a sidekick of Batman properly explored in a way that doesn't involve teen angst, but this version of Nightwing handles it well. He balances the rough training with the Dark Knight with his responsibilities as the leader. He never wanted to lead, but he was up to the task.

19 WORST - MISS MARTIAN

Young Justice Miss Martian

Miss Martian, when she started out, was a decent character. Having ties to Martian Manhunter as well as some emotional ties to Superboy, she was a fun, if not shallow, member of the team. However, things started to get bizarre when it was revealed that she was taking the human identity of a girl she watched on TV (including a catchphrase, which makes it that much weirder).

In the second season, she and Superboy had broken up, and she was fully embracing her telepathic powers by essentially screwing with the brains of any bad guy she met, permanently disabling them. Yeah, she took a turn on a dark road.

18 BEST - AQUALAD

aqualad-young-justice

The sidekick of the King of Atlantis, Aqualad was trained from a young age how to fight using his Atlantean powers. Moving over to the Young Justice team, Aqualad became its leader, being the oldest and having the most experience.

After the death of Tula, the girl he loved, and the revelation that Black Manta was his father, Aqualad ended up joining the Light. Despite being there for so long, it was all a ruse to spy on them from the inside and report any and all details to Nightwing. The fact that he kept that up for so long says a lot about his drive.

17 WORST - IMPULSE

Young Justice Impulse

Wally West was Kid Flash and the first speedster on Young Justice. However, he and Artemis decided to live a quiet life together. That's when Bart Allen, a speedster from the future, came back to the past to stop the events that would lead to the world's destruction and he eventually took the name Impulse.

What makes Impulse so bland is that he's painfully annoying. Using awkward slang like "crash" in every opportunity he can find on top of never shutting up, Impulse doesn't have nearly the same emotional appeal that his predecessor would. That said, him taking the mantle of Kid Flash is poetic.

16 BEST - KID FLASH

Wally West was one of the founding members of Young Justice and the sidekick to Barry Allen. Having a bit of a hot-headed nature, Wally would always rush into battle, but that never stopped his drive. He was one of the most passionate and dedicated members of the team.

He eventually left with Artemis so they could live a normal life. However, when the Light attacked, Wally went back in action to save the day. While he succeeded in saving the world, he gave up his life in the process. He made the greatest sacrifice even while he was retired, and there was not a dry eye in the room.

15 WORST - RED ARROW

red-arrow-arsenal-young-justice

The story behind Roy Harper in Young Justice is a fairly complicated one that becomes more difficult to follow as the show goes on. The whole reason Young Justice is started is because the sidekicks aren't allowed to enter the Justice League. While the rest of the team are content as members of a separate division, Roy is not.

He leaves the Justice League and Young Justice to become his own, angrier hero known as Red Arrow. All of his anger was due to his programming as a secret clone of Roy Harper, though, so it's not technically his fault. He's still a jerk no matter how you slice it.

14 BEST - BLUE BEETLE

Young Justice's Blue Beetle

Jaime Reyes was given the scarab after he was present when Kord Industries blew up. Since then, he's been figuring everything out as he goes. Constantly arguing back and forth with the scarab, Jaime struggles with doing the right thing and doing what's effective.

Being one of the focal characters during season two, Jaime had to deal with the prospect that he could, one day, be totally controlled by the scarab and become evil. Despite this idea, Jaime was still willing to fight the good fight and save the world from the Light. He also had an interesting friendship with Impulse.

13 WORST - ARSENAL

When it was revealed that Red Arrow was a clone, there was a search conducted for the real Roy Harper, who had been held captive and unconscious for years. After he finally got out, he was missing an arm. Gaining a new one from Lex Luthor, as well as a slew of other weapons, he took the name Arsenal.

Having two versions of Roy Harper gets awfully confusing, and it's a similar situation to when Spider-Man was replaced with Ben Reilly. Having been captured all that time, Arsenal was just as full of angst as Red Arrow, so he wasn't all that different. Furthermore, he decided to go the solo route just like Red Arrow, adding more confusing fuel to the fire.

12 BEST - SUPERBOY

Young Justice Superboy

A project of Cadmus, Superboy was their attempt at cloning Superman and using him for their own personal gain. However, the Young Justice got their first and freed Superboy. While he was violent at first, it ended up that he became one of the strongest and most passionate members of the team.

Superboy does have a tendency to be a little on the angry side, but it's his growth from an ill-tempered teen to a much more calm and thoughtful member of the team that makes him so compelling. It makes it all the more potent when Miss Martian starts becoming aggressive and he's the one that has to take the high road.

11 WORST - LAGOON BOY

lagaan-lagoon-boy-young-justice

Let's be honest, the only reason Lagoon Boy is on the team is to date Miss Martian and give some romantic tension between those two and Superboy. Being another Atlantean to join Young Justice, he had one of the most abrasive personalities on the team.

While some team members were hot-headed and impulsive, Lagoon Boy took it to a whole new level. It was almost as if the writers were trying to make him unlikable. He was constantly doing things that made him look like a big jerk. On top of that, his name is also kind of silly, but that's thanks to the comics.

10 BEST - BEAST BOY

Young Justice Beast Boy

Garfield Logan was the son of the woman that Miss Martian adopted her human identity from. After the mother passed away, though, Miss Martian felt like a mother to Logan, who was also given strange animal transformation powers thanks to getting some Martian healing.

Taking the name Beast Boy, he was one of the youngest members of the team as well as the youthful tether to the group. Being so young and having lost just about everything, Beast Boy knows that the right thing to do is fight. He still learns every day, but that's all part of growing up. He's also not an annoying character like Impulse.

9 WORST - WONDER GIRL

Wonder Girl in Young Justice

With a lot of superhero team-ups nowadays, there's always that character who is meant to reflect the audience by getting excited over cool match-ups and impressive moves. In Young Justice, that character is Wonder Girl, the sidekick to Wonder Woman.

However, a lot of the character moments for Wonder Girl involve her getting excited, losing focus in battle, and having to be reminded that she's in the field. She's not grating or annoying, she just doesn't have the same amount of depth that a lot of the other characters on the team do. It wouldn't be tragic if she were gone.

8 BEST - ARTEMIS

Young Justice Artemis

After Speedy left to become Red Arrow, Green Arrow took a new sidekick in the form of Artemis. Being an impressive archer, she joined the team, but failed to mention that she had some shady connections to villains, being the sister of Cheshire and daughter of Sportsmaster.

Not only did this help define her as a hero, but her connection with Wally proved to be one of the emotional drives of the second season. The two started the team hating each other, but quickly realized that they were much more attached that either of them realized. Artemis was also in disguise with Aqualad, constantly putting her in harm's way.

7 WORST - BUMBLEBEE

Bumblebee Young Justice

Bumblebee was a member of the team who has a lot of focus. She is a good team player as well as a dedicated college student. However, all of the time she devotes to other activities means that her non-superpowered boyfriend gets shoved to the side as a result.

Bumblebee doesn't offer a lot to the dynamic of the team, considering that most of her interactions are between her and her boyfriend, Mal Duncan. She has some nice powers that help her contribute effectively in battle (on top of having a cool costume), but personality wise, she's not all that compelling.

6 BEST - TIM DRAKE

Tim Drake in Young Justice

After Dick Grayson became Nightwing, Batman took a new sidekick in the form of Tim Drake (after Jason Todd, of course). Drake was similar to Grayson in a lot of ways, from his drive to his natural leader skills, but has some fundamental differences that still allow him to be compelling in his own right.

Drake seems to take his job as a hero much more seriously, not cracking as many jokes. Furthermore, he doesn't want to be a leader, much more so than how Grayson ever approached the subject. In a lot of ways, Drake is a younger version of the Dark Knight who is trying to find his own place in the world and the team.

5 WORST - GUARDIAN

Young Justice Guardian

Mal Duncan is a guy who has a lot of physical strength and gymnastic abilities and that's about it. He is romantically involved with Bumblebee, but suffers from some neglect issues when she decides that college is important. He's given more to do than just whine about his relationship when he takes the mantle of Guardian though.

Unfortunately, as a character, there's not a lot to Guardian that makes him stand out. There are plenty of characters on the team who don't have any powers, so Guardian is nothing new. Furthermore, most of his development is related to Bumblebee and their relationship.

4 BEST - ZATANNA

Zatanna Zatara has every reason to stop being a hero, but instead uses it as her drive to do better. When she took the Helmet of Fate and became Doctor Fate, she was going to be tied to the spirit forever. However, it was her father, Zatara (a powerful member of the Justice League), who decided to free his daughter by taking the spirit of Doctor Fate for himself.

Since then, Zatanna has been doing her best to live in her father's footsteps. She was one of the few who decided to take a promotion to the Justice League. Being their magic expert, Zatanna grows from just a learning magician to a powerful sorceress.

3 WORST - ROCKET

Rocket In Young Justice

Raquel Irvin was one of the newer members of Young Justice. Being a protege to superhero, Icon, she was inducted to the team around the same time he was inducted into the Justice League.

While her powers are quite impressive, there isn't much about Rocket's personality that stands out. She looks up to sidekicks, which is an interesting perspective on a show like Young Justice, but that topic is never explored fully enough to give it more weight. She is later inducted into the League herself, too, showing that she was never that important of a character for Young Justice.

2 BEST - STATIC

Young Justice Static

This is a character we watched grow from the very start. After gaining powers when kidnapped by the Reach, he realized that he abilities that would later be useful. There were other kids who had powers of their own, but Virgil was the one who was insistent on becoming a superhero.

Despite having some animosity toward how the Young Justice ran things, Virgil eventually came around and decided to join the team as the hero named Static. We're excited to see how this character will be utilized in the third season. After all, we haven't seen him on the small screen since his own animated series back in the day.

1 WORST - BATGIRL

Dick Grayson and Tim Drake weren't the only Batman sidekicks to join the team, as Barbara Gordon, Batgirl, would join their ranks as well. However, it seems that she's only there because a lot of people know who she is -- she doesn't offer much for the team.

There are already two Batman representatives in Young Justice that have leadership skills and can fight, so Batgirl seems slightly redundant. While it's nice to have more females on the team, Batgirl herself doesn't seem all that utilized in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps they're building to her getting paralyzed by the Joker, to which she'll become the team's Oracle.
