The TV hit Yellowstone is reportedly set to end shortly.

A new report from Deadline indicates that the Kevin Costner-led drama will conclude soon while the team plans a spinoff starring Matthew McConaughy. "We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that's the case for a long time to come," said a Paramount Network spokesperson. "Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we'd love to partner." While it currently seems likely to end after the second half of its fifth season this year, the exact final hasn't been confirmed.

According to the report, the issues leading to Yellowstone's ending stem from Costner's requests for the shooting schedule. Reportedly, Costner initially limited his schedule to 65 days for shooting seasons of Yellowstone. However, he reduced that to 50 days for the first half of Season 5. When it came time to shoot the second batch of episodes for the season, Costner only wanted a week of filming. The actor recently won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series for his work as John Dutton on Yellowstone, though he had to miss the ceremony due to the Santa Barbara floods.

Yellowstone Branches Out to Sequels and Prequels

Yellowstone has led to a pair of prequels during its five-season run. A limited series called 1883 aired in 2021 and stared Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Sam Elliott. It told the story of how the Dutton family acquired the land, which would later become the Yellowstone Ranch. Another prequel series, 1923, follows the Dutton family during the Great Depression, prohibition and Western expansion. That series stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, who struggle to run the ranch during the period. 1923 recently got renewed for a second season following its premiere in December 2022.

The fifth season sees Costner's John Dutton prepare for political war as he takes office as the governor of Montana. Other returning cast members for Yellowstone include Jamie Dutton (Wes Bently), Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille).

Yellowstone Season 5 premiered on Paramount Network on Nov. 13. No release date for the season half of the season has been announced.
