Yellowstone is no more but fans of the Dutton Family need not fear for the future.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Taylor Sheridan's massively popular Western drama is coming to a close with Season 5, which is scheduled to premiere in November 2023. The news comes after confirmation that star Kevin Costner has departed the franchise due to scheduling issues and an ongoing conflict with Sheridan. How this will impact the final season's story remains unknown.
While many fans may be disappointed at Yellowstone's conclusion, Paramount is already looking to the future. The studio also confirmed that a sequel series is now in development and has already been picked up for a straight-to-series order. Details on the new show are still largely unknown but it will feature Yellowstone in the title and will stream on Paramount+, a major addition to the streamer's roster of original content.
While casting has yet to be announced for the next show, rumors have swirled that Matthew McConaughy will step into the lead role. When prompted for information on this, a Paramount Network spokesperson said that the studio did not have anything official to announce but described McConaughy as a "phenomenal talent with whom we'd love to partner." Despite the announcement of the sequel series, it's still unknown whether the Oscar-winning is attached in any major capacity.
"Yellowstone has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits — from 1883 to Tulsa King, and I am confident our Yellowstone sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life," said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios.
The Story of Yellowstone
Yellowstone follows the exploits of the Dutton Family, the owners of the biggest ranch in the United States. The show has chronicled the drama and danger of their business, as the group not only contends with natural threats but competitors who will stop at nothing to sink their lifestyle. The show proved to be such a success that it spawned multiple spinoffs including the historical 1883 and 1923, both of which expand the Dutton Family tree.
Yellowstone Season 5 is scheduled to premiere in November while the sequel series does not currently have a release date.
