An official photo from FX's upcoming adaptation of Y: The Last Man offers a first look at the show's live-action version of Yorick Brown, main protagonist of the original Vertigo Comics series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra.

Y: The Last Man showrunner Eliza Clark shared the photo in a post to Instagram. It features the show's version of Yorick -- played by Ben Schnetzer -- who is standing atop a New York City taxi and sporting a hooded poncho and a gas mask, which the character wore in the comic in order to conceal his identity. Yorick is also holding a kennel, which houses his pet monkey, Ampersand.

While this technically isn't the first photo of Yorick from FX's planned Y: The Last Man adaptation to surface, it is the first photo taken from the final version of the show, which stars Schnetzer as the eponymous last man. A previously released photo also features Yorick wearing his gas mask and poncho while carrying a kennel. However, that image was taken from FX's original Y pilot, which starred Barry Keoghan as Yorick. That pilot was ultimately scrapped and the project was reworked, with showrunners Michael Green and Aida Mashaka Croal departing and Clark taking over. Furthermore, in addition to Schnetzer replacing Keoghan as Yorick, Ashley Romans and Olivia Thirlby replaced Lashana Lynch and Imogen Poots as Agent 355 and Hero Brown, respectively.

The original pilot for FX's adaptation of Y: The Last Man -- simply titled Y at the time -- went into production in August of 2018, with Y being ordered to series in February of 2019. Following the aforementioned showrunner change and recastings, the series was officially retitled Y: The Last Man and entered production in October of 2020. It was also announced that the show would not air on FX proper, but would rather stream as part of the FX on Hulu lineup alongside the American Horror Story spinoff American Horror Stories. Y: The Last Man is slated to premiere on FX on Hulu on Monday, Sept. 13. An FX on Hulu sizzle reel released earlier this year debuted the first official footage from the adaptation, though the video has since been privated.

Written by Vaughan and illustrated by Guerra, Y: The Last Man was originally published by DC Comics under its Vertigo imprint from 2002 to 2008, picking up the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series along the way. The comic, which ran for a total of 60 issues, follows Yorick Brown, who -- save for his monkey companion -- is the sole survivor of a mysterious plague that killed every single mammal on Earth with a Y chromosome.

Per an official synopsis for FX's adaptation,

Y: The Last Man traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome but for one cisgender man and his pet monkey. The series follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.
