Y: The Last Man has no shortage of heartbreaking moments; it's basically what the entire series is made up of. The creative team behind the project (Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra, and Jose Marzan Jr.) really managed to tug our heartstrings and hit us in the feels time and time again.

There are moments in the series that still get to fans to this day, and those are the moments we're going to talk about here. Here are the ten most heartbreaking moments in the entire Y: the Last Man series.

10 10. The Event

The event that caused the whole series to begin has to be included on the list. It's easy to just say "all the men on earth died" if you don't think about it too much, but the series kicked off with this event, and they showed us the true pain and chaos behind it. And it's something the series comes back to, obviously—always finding new ways to show the loss and pain all over again.

It wasn't just human males who lost their lives, but all animals as well. This fact isn't as blatant as the human element, but the series certainly doesn't shy away from it either. So, animal lovers are saddened at the idea of losing the diversity known to earth.

9 9. The Prison

One of the first major confrontations Yorick had to face occurred in a small town. It seemed perfect, minus the fact that they were still bouncing back from a major event, but Yorick soon learned the truth. The women in this town were all from prison.

Now, this in itself isn't exactly heartbreaking, though it did throw Yorick through a significant moral dilemma. The real concern is the realization that these women would have died in prison had they not been released. It makes us wonder how many women were trapped in locations like this where somebody didn't think to go and save them.

8 8. Sisterly Love

Yorick surviving may have been a miracle, but it was no surprise to learn that his sister survived. What is shocking is the dramatic plot arc his sister had. Early on in the series, Yorick was forced to see his sister become an Amazon—a man-hating organization bent on ridding the earth of the last surviving males.

If that weren't enough, he had to then witness his sister slaughter a woman in cold blood. Suddenly, his sister Hero wasn't the hero he had always believed her to be. This messed up the character in ways that are difficult to put to words, but there's no doubt that a lingering scar was left.

7 7. Women and Children First

For the briefest moment, Yorick had reason to hope that he wouldn't be the last man on earth after all. It turns out that, during the event, there were two men out in space, and they had survived whatever it was that caused the sudden death of all the males.

Yet, it wasn't to be. The shuttle ended up crashing, and, very heroically, the two men pushed their female counterpart out first, saying "women and children first." You see, she was a woman, sure, but she was also pregnant. They didn't survive, so we never did learn if they could have survived had they exited the shuttle.

6 6. His First Kill

You might think that Yorick's first kill would have been relatively anticlimactic, in a sense. After all, half the population dropped dead in the first twenty pages of the series. And, since that point, we've seen plenty of women die in battle.

Yet, Yorick himself wasn't prepared to make the call or admit to anybody what he had done. Yorick took the life of a woman that was threatening him, but, to be honest, his shooting her had more to do with her slaughtering a kind woman than it had to do with self-defense. It said a lot about his character, as did the fact that he later lied about what happened.

5 5. The Other Beth

When the event occurred, Yorick had been preparing to propose to his girlfriend at the time. From that moment on, he was on a quest to find his way back to the love of his life. He had full intentions of staying loyal to her, even despite the situation at hand.

That is until Beth came along. She didn't expect anything from him—certainly not commitment. Yet, she ended up with so much more. They had one night together, but it was a night that would later give her a daughter to call her own. The whole plot arc is heartbreaking for a different reason, Yorick's will and devotion being tested and the turmoil it throws him into, and that's before taking into account all of the trials Beth faced later on.

4 4. Separated from Ampersand

Ampersand

Yorick may have been the only surviving male human, but he wasn't alone on that count. His monkey also survived, despite the odds. Later, it was revealed that Ampersand was the reason they both survived, but that's for a different list.

Later on in the series, Yorick and Ampersand were separated from one another. Thus begins a dramatic and emotional adventure to reunite our unlikely friends. Seeing both of their struggles was painful, but Ampersand won the heartbreaking tale, especially considering he never understood what was happening to him.

3 3. The Truth Comes Out

Against all odds, Yorick managed to become reunited with his love, Beth. But things didn't work out as magically as he might have daydreamed. Mercifully, they didn't end up as poorly as his nightmares. So that is something.

After hearing Yorick admit that he had been planning on proposing to her before their call got cut off due to the major event taking place, Beth felt compelled to confess the truth to him. You see, she had been trying to break up with him during that phone call. Can you imagine how it felt to be Yorick at that moment? Beth had become a symbol to him—the reason to keep on going forward—only to have it all torn away with the truth.

2 2. The Death of Agent 355

Agent 355 was one of the few constants in the series, and there's no doubt that she's the reason Yorick survived as long as he did. Because of her main character status, it was easy to assume that she would be an exception to the devastation that occurred all around Yorick.

Agent 355's death was both shocking and heartbreaking. There was no buildup to it; she wasn't even in any apparent danger at the time. In fact, Yorick had just finished revealing his feelings towards her. She was shot by a sniper without ever really having a chance to respond to Yorick. Or to enjoy the peace she had certainly earned.

1 1. The Finale

Many endings can be bittersweet, but none so much as the ending in Y: the Last Man. There were several elements in this conclusion to break our hearts; the passing of Ampersand, for example. It was a moment that could have been glossed over, but the creative team opted to show us the raw pain and emotion of Ampersand's death. And it very nearly broke the readers.

Later, Yorick is revealed to have survived all of the events, but they certainly left him changed. His ending is bittersweet in the purest form, leaving a question for readers to hang on to.
