Following the news that FX on Hulu canceled Y: The Last Man after one season, reports suggest that if the show does end up getting a Season 2, it will most likely be on another major streamer.

According to THR, sources say that should Y: The Last Man continue following its FX on Hulu cancellation, HBO Max is likely to be its new home. This comes down to the fact that HBO Max's parent company, WarnerMedia, also owns DC, which originally published Y: The Last Man under its Vertigo imprint. Written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Pia Guerra, the comic ran for 60 issues from 2002-2008. HBO Max is already home to a number of DC shows, with many more on the way.

Y: The Last Man's cancellation came after only seven of Season 1's 10 episodes had aired. "We have learned that we will not be moving forward with FX on Hulu for Season 2 of Y: The Last Man," Clark shared on Twitter. At the time, she made it clear she wasn't ready for the series to end.

While nothing is set in stone regarding Y: The Last Man's future, FX Productions is willing to shop the series around. If FX is able to secure a new home for the series, such as HBO Max, FX Productions will have to consider selling library rights to Season 1, as well as transferring ownership of the series. It is also possible for FX Productions to become a content provider, though that seems unlikely with FX Productions now under the Disney umbrella.

While most shows get renewed or canceled based on their performance, audience numbers had nothing to do with FX on Hulu's decision to cancel Y: The Last Man. Rather, the cancellation came down to contract extensions, with options on the cast expiring on Oct. 15.

Y: The Last Man had quite a rocky road to the small screen. FX picked up the property in 2015, with the network ordering a pilot in April 2018. The show was then ordered to series in 2019. However, showrunner changes halted production temporarily. The series then lost its lead actor in February 2020, with production finally kicking off in October 2020. The delays ultimately caused the network to extend contract options on the cast, resulting in more money being spent than anticipated.

Y: The Last Man is currently streaming on FX on Hulu.
