With thirteen total films, the X-Men movie franchise is likely coming to a close as the Fox properties make their way over to Disney, Marvel, and the MCU. Recently, it was announced that the third entry in the Deadpool trilogy within the X-Men movie franchise would also be an MCU movie.

The crossover potential is both rife and complex, but the original franchise stands on its own without needing to exist in the MCU. As it is likely the X-Men will be rebooted for the MCU, fans reflect on their favorite moments in the earlier Fox X-Men movies. With so many movies, not every fight can make the top ten, but there are some truly excellent fights in the franchise.

10 The X-Men Vs. Apocalypse, X-Men: Apocalypse

When it was announced that Oscar Isaac would be taking on the role of En Sabah Nur, or Apocalypse, fans were understandably excited. His performance is not the problem, but the overall structure of the movie is. X-Men: Apocalypse is not considered one of the better X-Men movies in the franchise, but it does have a great battle sequence.

Two of En Sabah Nur’s Horsemen, Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto) and Ororo Munroe (Storm), turn on him. These two instead join up with Scott Summers and the X-Men; they help Charles Xavier, Professor X, fight Apocalypse in the astral plane. Eventually, Jean Grey, the Phoenix, gets called in to help and she completely disintegrates Apocalypse in the process.

9 The Dark Phoenix Vs. Everyone, X-Men: The Last Stand

Jean Grey doesn’t always use her powers for good. In X-Men: The Last Stand, mutants have to fight against humans, but the battle ultimately comes between Jean Grey and the rest of the world. The Phoenix becomes the Dark Phoenix, completely beyond anyone’s control, including her own.

The Brotherhood and the X-Men are fighting, the humans are getting involved, and things seem truly chaotic when the battle narrows down to just Jean Grey and Logan Howlett, aka Wolverine. In a moment of lucidity, Jean tells Logan she needs to kill him to save everyone else. Logan realizes this is the only course of action and uses his claws to kill Jean, the love of his life and a beloved member of the X-Men.

8 The X-Men And The Brotherhood Vs. Stryker, X2

While the X-Men, lead by Professor X, and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, lead by Magneto, often butt heads, they did team up in X2. Professor X and Magneto find themselves on opposite sides a lot, but they are secretly (or not-so-secretly) very close, and they see eye-to-eye more than most would like to believe. They team up against common enemies often, which was exactly the case in X2.

In this fight, Professor X’s X-Men help Magneto’s Brotherhood, with Wolverine and Mystique doing a great deal of the heavy lifting. However, the best part of the fight comes when it seems that it’s all over — and the X-Men are going to die. Again, it’s Jean Grey who saves the day, holding off the water just long enough for the X-Jet to take off; unfortunately, it comes at the cost of her life.

7 Wolverine And Mariko Yashida Vs. The Silver Samurai, The Wolverine

Silver Samurai The Wolverine

Wolverine gets his own trilogy within the X-Men movie franchise, much like Deadpool. Logan has three movies starring himself: X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, and Logan. While X-Men Origins: Wolverine was not particularly well-received, The Wolverine is generally liked, and Logan is lauded as one of the best superhero movies of the 21st century.

The trilogy only increased in quality, and the fight that takes place in the second movie is part of the reason why. Wolverine teams up with Mariko Yashida against the Silver Samurai. Not only is the fight excellent, but Logan’s story arc with Jean comes to a close as he hallucinates her one last time — and lets her go. Logan also loses his adamantium claws and regenerates his bone claws in this fight, which is gruesome and awesome in equal measure.

6 Deadpool Vs. Firefist, Deadpool 2

Deadpool is one of the best fighters in the Marvel Universe, and not many fans would disagree. The Merc with a Mouth is a smooth-talking and hilarious anti-hero; Wade Wilson is a fan-favorite for many audiences, and it was only a matter of time before he hit the silver screen. Deadpool and its sequel, Deadpool 2, were both well-received, which is unsurprising. The fight sequence in the sequel is better than half the fights in the X-Men movie universe already.

In this fight, Deadpool seems like he’ll have to fight against Cable. However, he ends up fighting against Firefist, who has gone completely off the rails. In fact, Deadpool even dies and meets Vanessa in the afterlife before Cable rewinds time and saves his life. Both thrilling and humorous — Deadpool’s staples — this fight could’ve been better, but could’ve been significantly worse, as well.

5 The X-Men Vs. Magneto, X-Men

Wolverine x-men movie 2000

Superhero movies were starting to gain traction and popularity when X-Men was released in 2000. This movie was arguably the one that really kick-started the superhero genre, and it’s not hard to see why. The film is full of exciting moments and, for audiences watching in 2000, this was the first time they got to see many of their favorite superheroes on the silver screen.

In this movie, the X-Men fight Magneto — a classic good versus evil plot for X-Men comics making the transition to the movies. In the film’s best battle, the X-Men fight against Magneto and his Brotherhood. It’s Wolverine who ultimately scales the Statue of Liberty and fights Magneto to save Rogue. This is certainly one of the most exciting movies in the entire X-Men movie universe.

4 The Past Vs. The Future, X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Movie KITTY PRYDE APPEARANCES - X-Men Days of Future Past

The most interesting fight in the movies might just come in X-Men: Days of Future Past. In this film, there is a fight that is technically two battles: one taking place in the past, and one taking place in the future. As the fight in the past rages between Magneto, Wolverine, Mystique, and a few other X-Men, the fight in the future is lost.

The future fight is between the only last remaining mutants — Professor X and Magneto among them. Many mutants fight the Sentinels in this fight and die, before the fight in the past comes to a climax and Mystique, Professor X, and Magneto end the battle. They are able to prevent the future fight from ever happening with their choices in the past battle, making this truly an interesting and complex fight.

3 Deadpool Vs. Ajax, Deadpool

When Deadpool was first introduced in Deadpool, his big villain was Ajax. He teams up with Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead to fight, but they end up needing to battle Angel Dust while Wade Wilson saves his beloved Veronica and fights Ajax. The only reason Deadpool hadn’t killed Ajax before this was Wade’s desire for a cure to his appearance. When Ajax reveals there is no cure, Deadpool is so enraged that he executes Ajax on the spot. This fight is exciting, hilarious, and ends on an extreme high note, making it one of the better fights in the X-Men movies.

2 Magneto Vs. Humanity, X-Men: First Class

Magneto and Charles First Class

Much like X-Men Origins: Wolverine throwing it back to introduce Wolverine’s origins, X-Men: First Class did the same with Professor X and Magneto. Before they were a superhero and a supervillain, they were simply Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, inseparable best friends bonded closer than blood. Charles helps Erik hunt down Sebastian Shaw, and even holds Shaw in place as Erik kills him, experiencing Shaw’s death with him in order to do so.

When the fight comes to a head, though, it is because humans have fired missiles on the beach that Erik, Charles, and their fellow mutants have gathered on. Erik must choose if he will use the missiles to destroy humanity or not. Ultimately, the choice is taken from him when he inadvertently is responsible for Charles getting shot in the spine. This fight is not only incredible to watch, but has an emotional power beyond most other X-Men movie moments.

1 Logan Vs. X-24, Logan

logan fighting x-24

It’s almost impossible to fight Wolverine and win — unless he is fighting his genetic clone. The third movie in Logan’s own trilogy within the X-Men movies, Logan, introduces X-24, an exact genetic clone of Logan Howlett. X-24 is responsible for killing Charles Xavier and countless others, and Logan sees it as his responsibility to stop X-24. In the film’s climax, Logan fights Dr. Zander Rice, Donald Pierce, and, most importantly, X-24.

In the end, X-24 kills Logan, and Laura (or X-23) is the one who shoots and kills X-24. Logan’s death in Laura’s arms signifies the end of the X-Men, a fact only compounded when Laura marks his grave with an X. Not only does Logan die, but so do the X-Men, as the franchise effectively comes to a thematic close.
