The Mighty Thor. Few in the Marvel Universe have the power of the God of Thunder. Fewer still are worthy to wield his mystical hammer Mjolnir. Some possess cosmic power on a scale not even Thor can compete with, but you might be surprised how many of them number among the X-Men.

A fair number of the X-Men — and their assorted allies and enemies — pack enough punch to give Thor a run for his money. While a scarce few are worthy to pick up the hammer, there are enough that can kick his butt, so let's take a look at ten X-Men who are surprisingly stronger than Thor.

10 Scarlet Witch

Putting Wanda Maximoff on this is list might be a bit of a stretch, but she is a mutant and she did make her first appearance in Uncanny X-Men as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. And stretching things is the key here. Namely, reality. Thor can traverse different dimensions and realities via the Bi-Frost. The Scarlet Witch can alter them, which she infamously did during the House of M storyline. Strength, wisdom, and endurance are nothing compared to an opponent who can literally alter the battlefield, to say nothing of reality itself.

9 Professor X

Professor x Charles Xavier Cerebro

Charles Xavier, particularly in his most recent depiction, presents Thor with some problems. Foremost among them is that Professor X is a powerful telepath. Thor can take a hit from the best of them, and though he does have some mental resistance, because, you know, he's a god, he can't always keep someone out of his head (No-Prize if you remember The Puppet Master). Xavier took control of Thor's mind in the spectacular Avengers vs. X-Men crossover a few years back, proving Thor's susceptibility in this area.

8 Hope Summers

Hope Summers from the X-Men surrounded by other Marvel heroes

Hope Summers - that last name will become familiar - would present some problems. Basically, take any mutant on this list, or any mutant at all, and give her their powers. The first new mutant born after the events of M Day, where Scarlet Witch reduced the number of mutants in the world to just a few hundred, Hope became an immediate target. Cable rescued her and took her to the future, where she grew up before returning to the present. Her primary ability is to manipulate the powers of others in her proximity. She can mimic them, and double and triple them up with no apparent limits.

7 Iceman

As a founding member of the X-Men, Iceman may not get all the attention his other superpowered (and super-dramatic) teammates do. And you may not think he has all that much power that someone like Thor would be concerned, but you'd be wrong. Recently classified as an Omega-level mutant, Bobby Drake has enormous cryokinetic power that generally he doesn't utilize.

At the extreme end of his power, he can freeze all the molecules within an object or a person with a single thought. Since he can convert organic matter into ice, he can extend his consciousness through it, and essentially, through all matter in the world if he froze it, including big Asgardians and their hammers.

6 Onslaught

Nothing can defeat the 90s, not even Thor. So, deep breath: back during the Fatal Attractions storyline, Magneto ripped all the adamantium out of Wolverine's body. This was not cool, so Professor X wiped Magneto's mind in retaliation. This horrible act resulted in part of Magneto's consciousness being entangled with Xavier's, a rock in his mental shoe that eventually became the superpowerful Onslaught. The X-Men fell to Onslaught, and then so did the Fantastic Four and the Avengers, including Thor. Thor even flew right into the psionic entity,  with no effect.

5 Apocalypse

Not traditionally a member of the X-Men (because reasons) Apocalypse has recently been more chummy with the team on the island of Krakoa. En Sabah Nur is generally considered the first mutant, and he's generally intent on being the last. His power is sufficient to make that a very real possibility. Apocalypse actually fought Thor in 1013 A.D., before Thor had Mjolnir. Apocalypse won then, and he likely would now. Beside the immortality, which really is enough, he has superhuman strength, endurance, and speed. Also, he can fly. And report. And he's telepathic. Yeah, he's going to win.

4 Rachel Summers

Like Hope Summers, Rachel has moved around a bit in the timeline. Originally from an alternate future where Sentinels had all but wiped out mutantkind, she's the daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey. Rachel is also the inheritor of the Phoenix Force, which in general is not a thing you want to mess with. Another Omega-level mutant, her telepathic abilities are somewhat limited compared to others, but that's the least of Thor's worries. Her energy projection is cosmic (just ask Galactus) and beyond that, she can alter and transmute matter. That ought to do it, but if it doesn't there's lots more she can do. Lots.

3 Franklin Richards

Also not an X-Man, though there's been some debate over his status recently, Franklin Richards is nevertheless a powerful mutant. Debuting in Fantastic Four Annual #6, Franklin is the son of Reed and Sue Richards (and in that one alternate timeline, lover of Rachel Summers).

It quickly became apparent that Franklin was a mutant, and one of the most powerful ever born (that comes from Galactus, so you know it's big-time). There's nothing really Franklin can't do. His power set is ridiculously extensive, and includes time-travel, creating pocket universes (this came in handy once), energy manipulation, telepathy, telekinesis, and a host of others one suspects he isn't even aware of.

2 Storm

Storm Thor Coleen Doran

The God of Thunder faces some serious competition in Storm. Another powerful Omega-level mutant, her ability to control weather puts anyone at a serious disadvantage. Iceman puts Thor in a bad spot with ice alone; Storm brings all the rest of the elements. And she can do them all at once. Her manipulation of weather has created an Earth Link through which is tuned to the world, and grants her as much agency through it as Thor has through Mjolnir. While the X-Man and Avenger are as often friends as enemies, Storm has been the Goddess of Thunder a couple of times now and is worthy to wield Mjolnir.

1 Jean Grey

First off, she just won't die. Second, Jean is  - wait for it - an Omega-level mutant with such extraordinary telepathic and telekinetic ability that Professor X had to suppress it when she was young. Putting Jean in a corner (or a cocoon) generally doesn't work, and there is little Thor could do against her. Jean can drain psionic energy from others to supplement her own. On top of that, psychic blasts and mental manipulation would render the God of Thunder moot, and if for some reason she has access to the powers of the Phoenix in this hypothetical battle, well, let's ask the D'Bari how that went.
