Five months, virtually to the day, after the debut of the first look at Dark Phoenix, fans of Fox's X-Men franchise now counting down the hours to the release of the second trailer, which they hope will answer at least some of the lingering questions about the sequel. But first and foremost, we're left to wonder when the new footage will drop.

The studio trumpeted the arrival of the trailer with the debut of a new poster on Wednesday, promising only "tomorrow night." So, we're left to search elsewhere for clues.

Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix will be a swansong for the 19-year-old film series, as the rights to the X-Men (as well as Deadpool and the Fantastic Four) will belong to Disney following the media giant's acquisition of 21st Century Fox, which could be completed as early as next month. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will then oversee the future of the characters.

Oh, sure, Josh Boone's horror-tinged The New Mutants is still targeted for an August premiere, although no one seems confident it will actually make it into theaters. But, no matter where that spinoff lands, Dark Phoenix will be the last of the main X-Men films to be released under the Fox banner.

Dark Phoenix X-Men Grave

It's also a bit of a do-over for Kinberg, and the franchise, following 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, which took elements from the seminal Marvel Comics storyline "The Dark Phoenix Saga," and then shoe-horned them into a subplot that didn't satisfy anyone (not even original Jean Grey actress Famke Janssen).

Set about a decade after the events of 2016's Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix pits the team against its greatest threat yet, as Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) is struck by a mysterious cosmic force as the X-Men return from a rescue mission in space. As Jean wrestles with the entity inside her, show grows more powerful and spirals out of control, leaving the X-Men to not only try to save their teammate but also to defend the planet from aliens who seek to exploit the force within her.

The new trailer will undoubtedly fill in a few of the blanks of the story, while introducing plenty of new puzzles. But when should we expect it to drop?

The first Dark Phoenix trailer was released on Sept. 26, just after midnight Eastern Time, during an appearance by Turner on The Late Late Show with James Corden. It just so happens that Jessica Chastain, who co-stars in the film as a mysterious, shape-shifting alien, will be a guest on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

It's probably a good bet, then, that Chastain will introduce the new trailer during her Tonight Show appearance, followed by its release online around midnight ET/9 p.m. ET.

Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film is scheduled to be released on June 7.
