There were a lot of issues behind-the-scenes of X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the last instalment in Fox's X-Men franchise before the studio was acquired by Disney. Evidently, there was a lot of confusion, with star Jessica Chastain recently admitting that she wasn't aware of who her character really was.In an interview with Josh Horowitz, Chastain discussed her experience, compared with that of Oscar Isaac. She explained, "The reality is, our situations were very different. My situation-- I think... studio was bought at a certain point. I didn't even know what my character's name was until I saw the film... 'What's happening?'" She went on to say, "It was an interesting thing. But, Simon Kinberg, who directed it, is an incredible human being."RELATED: Frank Grillo Says Fans Should Expect More Crossbones in the MCU

X-Men: Dark Phoenix was set in the 1990s and followed the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, after Jean Grey was forced to unleash her power to defeat the ancient mutant, En Sabah Nur. In Dark Phoenix, Chastain played Vuk, a member of the shapeshifting alien race known as the D'Bari. She attempted to capture and destroy Jean, who was being enveloped in the power of the cosmic power, the Phoenix Force.

The film went through a prolonged post-production lasting a year, which is unusually long for a film. The reason behind it was that Kinberg wished to focus on the details of the visual effects. Fox also delayed the film numerous times to facilitate reshoots after test screenings resulted in negative feedback from audiences. The film was also rewritten substantially. As an example, the film was originally going to feature the Hellfire Club and the return of Emma Frost. They were ultimately replaced by Skrulls during rewrites, which were replaced by the D'Bari in further rewrites. It is likely these rewrites that resulted in Chastain's uncertainty about who or what her character was.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix was originally set to be released in March 2018. It's premiere was pushed back to Nov. 2, 2018, then again to Feb. 14, 2019. Disney's acquisition of Fox took place in March 2019, throwing several projects into uncertainty, including Dark Phoenix and New Mutants.

Fans have been guessing at the fate of the X-Men following Disney's acquisition of Fox, trying to determine when and how the X-Men will debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was reported earlier this year that an X-Men reboot is in development. More recently, Marvel Studios announced four untitled projects to be released throughout 2024. There is speculation that at least one of these projects will introduce the X-Men.
