X-Factor was originally a reunion of the five original X-Men: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman, and Angel. They were alternatively known as the X-Terminators, and they posed as mutant-hunters to, in reality, help save mutants from their persecutors. After this team rejoined the X-Men proper, Professor X and Cyclops wanted a government-affiliated team to carry on the X-Factor name. This team included the likes of Havok, Polaris, Banshee, Shatterstar, Forge, Quicksilver, Multiple Man, Wolfsbane, and Strong Guy.

Those last three would later reunite under the title "X-Factor Investigations" when Multiple Man won a game show and came into a lot of money. It formed after House of M and Decimation--when the mutant population was drastically reduced by Scarlet Witch. X-Factor Investigations was intended to be a detective agency more than an actual superhero team. In addition to Multiple Man, Wolfsbane, and Strong Guy, the team was joined by Siryn, Monet, Rictor, and Layla Miller when it formed.

10 Naming The Team "XXX Investigations"

The first mistake of Multiple Man and X-Factor--and arguably an omen for things to come--was Madrox wanting to name the PI firm "XXX Investigations." While the letter "X" has a special meaning in Marvel Comics, the average person would see the name "XXX Investigations" and get a very different idea about the intent of the organization. Thankfully, Wolfsbane talked Jamie out of this one, getting him to name it "X-Factor Investigations" instead.

9 Threatening Damian Tryp In Broad Daylight

Shortly after the founding of X-Factor Investigations, the team entered a feud with the enigmatic Damian Tryp and his company, Singularity Investigations. Tryp turned out to be a mutant offshoot called a "changling," like Multiple Man himself. After X-Factor exposed evidence that one of Singularity's clients committed a murder, Tryp, in a rage, beat Siryn near to death in an alley. Afterward, Multiple Man and Strong Guy confronted Tryp in Central Park and threatened violence upon him in broad daylight. While they certainly had justification after what Tryp did to Siryn, it can't be denied that angrily and publicly threatening a citizen certainly falls under "shady."

8 Working With Valerie Cooper

While Valerie Cooper has expressed sympathy for the mutant plight on many occasions, she still represents a government organization, O.N.E., that has shown animosity towards mutants just as often. Jamie Madrox worked with Valerie constantly throughout the existence of X-Factor Investigations.

Worse yet, he often did it without even telling the rest of his team. This came to a head when O.N.E. agents tried to arrest Siryn and Richtor and injured Val in the crossfire.

7 Using Syrin's Voice To Interrogate Spider-Man About M-Day

XF Investigations formed in the shadow of M-Day and Decimation, but they didn't know a lot about what actually went down. In researching what really happened that day, Siryn used her powers of sonic persuasion to coerce Spider-Man into speaking on the subject against his will. This led to X-Factor learning about the X-Men's involvement in M-Day. Poor put-upon Peter Parker.

6 Helping Quicksilver "Repower Mutants"

Quicksilver

While repowering mutants who lost their abilities on M-Day seems like a noble idea on the surface, the execution was shaky at best. Quicksilver stole Terrigen Crystals from the Inhumans (in a caper that was very messed up in its own right) and set up a "clinic" in Mutant Town--a section of Manhattan working at the time as a haven for the remaining mutant population. X-Factor even offered sanctuary to Quicksilver after he had a run-in with the X-Men. Later, Pietro worked with a group called "X-Cell" to kidnap and convince Rictor that the Terrigen could give mutants their powers back. Unfortunately, it was just as likely to kill mutants, and it led to the deaths of two members of X-Cell. Only then did Rictor and X-Factor work to stop Quicksilver from working with his "cure" in Mutant Town.

5 Strong Guy Willing To Let Someone Die

Strong Guy fighting.

Strong Guy was briefly killed after being shot by Ballistique during a protest. However, he was resurrected by Layla Miller, but she was unable to bring back his soul. Guido becomes more aggressive and reckless after this, culminating in a battle with a false Dormammu. The demon holds a woman hostage and promises to kill her should Strong Guy and his at-the-time romantic interest, Monet, advance on him.

Guido claims not to care, and the woman is only saved when this version of Dormammu is abruptly destroyed. This leads to a falling out between Guido and Monet, and it ends with Strong Guy leaving the team.

4 Hunting Down All The Madrox Dupes

Uncanny X-Men 2 Multiple Man

X-Factor's stance against the Superhuman Registration Act is undercut when Madrox discovers that one of his dupes implanted in S.H.I.E.L.D. already registered both Monet and Rictor, while the rest of the team were pre-registered because of their affiliation with the prior X-Factor team. This prompts Madrox to hunt down all of his dupes that he sent out into the world to gather information. Madrox receives whatever information his dupes learn when they are killed and/or absorb back into him. However, given the way Madrox dupes develop their own identities and personalities, it does seem like Multiple Man sent these copies of himself into the world strictly to make a life for themselves and die for him. This crusade is only stopped when Madrox discovers that one of his dupes formed a family.

3 Hunting Down Wolfsbane's Son

Wolfsbane

Rahne Sinclair's quest to find her estranged son unleashed a myriad of problems on both X-Factor and the boy himself. Among other things, Darwin, who had joined X-Factor Investigations at this point, met with a future version of Tier Sinclair and believed that Rahne's son would cause an apocalyptic event in the future. XF Investigations are able to stop Darwin from killing Tier, but Strong Guy later kills the boy anyway.

2 Bombing Singularity HQ

Layla Miller Multiple Man

Singularity Investigations and its owners, a trio of Damian Tryp's of different ages, were villainous intent on unleashing the Legacy Virus upon the mutant world once again. However, bombing SI's headquarters may not have quite been a measured response. That didn't stop a Multiple Man dupe, who dubbed himself the "X-Factor," from doing just that. He was spawned during a fight between Multiple Man and the eldest Tryp and hid away in Singularity's armory. The bombing ended Singularity, the two younger Tryp's, and the "X-Factor" dupe himself.

1 Selling X-Factor To Serval Industries

Polaris All-New X-Factor

X-Factor Investigations came to its end when Jamie Madrox sold the name to Serval Industries, a multi-billion dollar corporation that wanted their own personal superhero team. Jamie sold the name, XF Investigations, already on its way out, was completely shut down, and Polaris, Gambit, and Quicksilver joined up with Serval. Cypher, Danger, Decay, and Warlock would later join the team.
