Xena: Warrior Princess Reboot Scrapped By NBC

Ready your battle-cry, Xena : Warrior Princess fans — NBC has axed its planned reboot of the show.

In a brief interview, NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke told The Hollywood Reporter, “nothing is happening” with the reboot project right now. “We looked at some material,” Salke said. “We decided at that point that it didn’t warrant the reboot.”

However, the possibility for a Xena reboot still stands, depending on the story.

“I’d never say never on that one because it’s such a beloved title, but the current incarnation is dead,” she said, adding that “I need someone to come in witha point of view about what they want to do.”

The news comes several months after writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach and NBC parted ways. In April 2017, Grillo-Marxuach cited creative differences as the reason for his departure.

You could argue that Grillo-Marxuach did have a definite point of view, since his plans would have made canon what many in the fandom have speculated on and championed — Xena and her partner Gabrielle’s romantic relationship.

“‘Xena’ will be a very different show made for very different reasons,” Grillo-Marxuach wrote on his blog in March. “There is no reason to bring back ‘Xena’ if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a realtionship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s.”
