Next-gen console users will have to wait a little longer to play Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics' Marvel's Avengers.

Square Enix announced in a "State of the Game" address that it was pushing the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 versions of Marvel's Avengers to 2021. The delay is to further fine-tune the game in order "to ensure that we give our team the time to deliver a next-gen experience showcasing all that this game is meant to be."

The current versions of the game are undergoing patches to address certain issues raised by players. The new improvements include improved frame rates and faster loading times. In addition, Series X|S and PS5 users will be able to play in co-op mode with Xbox One and PS4 users and carry their saves from previous games.

Marvel's Avengers features Earth's Mightiest Heroes uniting to fight the forces of Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.), with the young Inhuman Kamala Khan joining their ranks. The game received praise for its story but was criticized for gameplay mechanics and technical issues.

More content will be available for the game, including Spider-Man as an exclusive character for the PlayStation version of the game. Other characters, including Hawkeye and his protege Kate Bishop, will be playable characters with their own character-specific missions. Notably, though, the Kate Bishop DLC was also delayed to 2021.

Marvel’s Avengers is a third-person action adventure game with single-player and co-op missions and is built as an expanding live service where additional characters will be released post-launch. It features an original story with new depictions of the characters.

Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix, Marvel's Avengers is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC.
