The Zombie Apocalypse genre of fiction had a massive shot in the arm in the 2000s, coming to dominate much of the media of the first two decades. Its stories, typically depicting an unlikely and ragged group of survivors attempting to survive in a world where civilization has succumbed to the rapacious living dead, cropped up in every medium.

Gaming is no exception, with zombie games coming in all manner of forms. Almost as popular with gamers were discussions of characters they'd like to accompany if they were living through a zombie apocalypse. Even those from non-zombie games could prove invaluable for survival and the vaults of Xbox exclusives house a number of lethal possibilities.

6 Revan Would Bring The Force To Your Side

Revan wielding red and purple lightsabers Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Although also released on PC, acclaimed Star Wars RPG Knights of the Old Republic was originally released for the very first Xbox, showing that the console could run more than first-person shooters. Surrounded by an iconic plot twist, its protagonist, Revan, has gone down in video game history.

Revan would also make an excellent choice for a zombie apocalypse companion. Even if they don't get to bring their lightsaber, they have a full array of force powers to use, from healing, to increasing people's speed tenfold, to throwing hordes of zombies across the room with a mere wave of their hands. The ability to bend reality is useful in most circumstances, including a zombie outbreak — although a Dark Side Revan might prove a dangerous ally.

5 Kait Diaz Is A More Measured Space Soldier

Kate Diaz the protagonist of Gear 5 Gears of War

Any of the protagonists of Gears of War would be great companions in a zombie apocalypse. They're hardened, impossibly masculine soldiers who are used to operating in extreme situations with low odds of survival and they all have leadership skills. Although they're primarily used to battling behind waist-high walls, they're definitely tough enough to adapt to the run-and-gun of fighting zombies.

The reason to tag along with Kait Diaz over any of the members of the Fenix family is her more reasonable personality. She has the same loyalty, bravery, and heroism as previous protagonists in the franchise, but she is also popular with Gears of War fans for being more rational than her predecessors and less prone to reckless actions that could prove lethal in a post-apocalyptic world.

4 Sunset Overdrive's Protagonist Can Handle Anything

Promotional artwork from Sunset Overdrive game

Sunset Overdrive is an Xbox exclusive action-adventure game that prioritizes colorful, adrenaline-pumping action in a sharp contrast to the muted browns and greys that typically color the zombie apocalypse genre. Underneath the glitz and garishness, however, there is a protagonist who is capable of doing whatever it takes to survive.

Able to run, skate, parkour, climb, skate, or zipline, they're never going to get caught out or cornered by a horde. Putting up with their wacky and zany personality and antics might prove challenging, but having Sunset Overdrive's protagonist as an ally would certainly make surviving a zombie apocalypse a doddle

3 Jack Joyce Has Time Powers

Jack Joyce, the protagonist of Quantum Break game.

Controlling any fundamental force of nature is already an invaluable skill, but controlling time is enough to put a person on the level of a god. Although Jack Joyce from Remedy's Quantum Break is not omnipotent, he has an immense amount of influence over time within an area around him, able to bring several "time powers" to bear.

Simply freezing zombies in time is already enough to justify sticking with Joyce, but he can also use his powers to attack zombies in melee safely, levitate zombies into the air, and create force fields. Furthermore, he can look into echoes of the past and may be one of the few who could actually learn why there are zombies everywhere to begin with.

2 A Sea Of Thieves Pirate Can Flee To Safe Waters

A motley crew of pirates from Sea of Thieves game

Although zombies are capable of walking, biting, flailing, and possibly running, most games show them as being unable to swim. Whether they drown or simply sink to the bottom of the ocean, they can't catch a swimming person and definitely can't catch a boat.

Sea of Thieves is all about its pirates and their ships, with most of the game being spent on the water. As long as any survivors of a zombie apocalypse and the pirate stay on the ship, zombies are practically a non-entity as far as threat goes. Furthermore, a cannon shot into a horde of zombies will do far more than gunning zombies down one at a time.

1 The Master Chief Is The Perfect Soldier

Halo 3 Cover Screen Master Chief

Of all Xbox characters, none are quite as iconic as Halo's Master Chief. A faceless super-soldier with a quiet, snarky personality and an unshakeable determination to get the job done, the Chief is unlikely to so much as blink when faced with a horde of zombies and a civilian to keep safe.

Even without Master Chief's MJOLNIR power armor or his futuristic guns, Chief is stronger, faster, and smarter than the average human being, as well as feeling little fear and needing less sleep. The Chief has single-handedly ended zombie-esque Flood outbreaks on numerous occasions — he is the perfect companion to have.
