Many beloved X-Men have been asked to risk their lives in X of Swords, dueling the Swordbearers of Arakko for the survival of their homeland Krakoa and the entire Earth. However, it turns out one very important hero is having a far easier time of it than his friends.

Of all the champions involved in X of Swords, Cypher has been pretty lucky throughout. While his teammates have fallen, he's avoided the bloodshed for the most part and even got married to an Arakko-born wife.

Cypher being one of the Champions of Krakoa has been a cause for concern since the idea was presented. While he's not a warrior by nature, Cypher is also vitally important to Krakoa as the only one who can communicate with the living island nation. With the strange elements of Otherworld keeping people from being properly revived by the Five on Krakoa if they're killed, Cypher's safety has never been so much of a priority. He trained with Magik in an attempt to prepare for battle, and even brought his friend Warlock along for the fight as his living blade. But the threat of a major battle has hung over Cypher throughout the event.

However, things have actually worked out fairly well for Cypher, all things considered. Although he was the one who ingested the poisoned food that was meant for Wolverine, Cypher was actually saved by the intervention of the Arakko Swordbearers: Isca used her blade to give him a makeshift tracheotomy so he could breathe, while the White Sword utilized his healing powers to bring Cypher back from the brink of death. Notably, the White Sword apparently conscripts anyone he revives into his service as payment for the use of his powers. But due to the shady circumstances of the attack and his own warrior's honor, the White Sword willingly forgives Cypher of any obligation to him -- something Summoner notes he has never done before.

Cypher's duel even turns out not to be a sword fight like he'd initially feared. Dragged off to receive ceremonial garb for a challenge in Excalibur #14, Cypher is shocked to discover that he won't be fighting the deadly Bei of the Blood Moon. Instead, both of them are given robes and flowers, as it turns out Saturnyne's challenge to them is to become married. Although he can't understand Bei despite his mutant abilities -- which genuinely intrigues the New Mutant -- Cypher is immediately drawn to her. Bei seems to feel the same way, calling him "fair" and sharing some surprisingly romantic and dedicated vows during the ceremony. Both agree to the marriage, ensuring their kingdoms each receive a point in the tournament.

X of Swords hasn't been easy for everyone. Captain Britain has already been destroyed during her battle, and while Wolverine has been victorious in his fights he has had to suffer devastating attacks from the likes of War. But despite the accidental attempt on his life earlier in the event, Cypher has been having a pretty good string of luck. He might even end up leaving the conflict with a wife, as their new marriage might give Bei a reason to immigrate to Krakoa. While the tournament isn't over yet and the forces of Arakko are still trying to defeat the X-Men, Cypher might be not out of the woods yet, but he's at least had a better time of it than most.
