WARNING: The following contains spoilers for S.W.O.R.D. #9 & Wolverine #17, both on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The mutant nation of Krakoa was built to weather any threat and to fully unite the mutants of the world behind one banner -- not necessarily just that of the X-Men, but of a future where mutants can flourish and be safe. But certain players have been acting of their own accords and making their own plans, with two such schemers revealed to be in dangerously powerful positions.

In Wolverine #17 (by Benjamin Percy, Kan Medina, Cam Smith, Java Tartaglia, and VC's Cory Petit) and S.W.O.R.D. #9 (by Al Ewing, Jacopo Camagni, Fernando Sifuentes, and VC's Ariana Maher), two mutant allies of Krakoa -- Maverick and Wiz-Kid respectively -- are revealed to have far more dangerous loyalties.

S.W.O.R.D. has been working to serve as Krakoa's galactic outreach, spreading the influence and impact of the mutant nations further into the galaxy. As a result, they've become one of the primary concerns of forces like Orchis, who have been uniting anti-mutant forces from across the globe. Orchis' latest plan involves using the new Lethal Legion to target the Shi'Ar Empress Xandrea when she comes to Planet Arakko as part of a diplomatic visit. Watching from afar, Henry Gyrich contacts his mole in S.W.O.R.D. and asks if they're ready to continue the attack -- prompting the reveal that Wiz-Kid, S.W.O.R.D.'s tech expert, is a double agent working for Gyrich and has been keeping him updated on what the mutant space station has been doing.

Meanwhile, Meanwhile, Wolverine has found an ally in C.I.A. Agent Jeff Bannister, who helps keep Logan informed on the US Government's views on the mutants and their nation. From his position in the Codex, he monitors information from across the globe. This has gotten him involved in multiple assignments -- including his latest investigation, which results in his fellow analysts being assassinated while he's out getting everyone lunch. He and his daughter go on the run, while Logan finds a message from him hidden in a beer bottle hinting that something is amiss and that there's a mole in Krakoa. Jeff is later confronted by Maverick who has decided to remain a free agent despite his trusted history with Wolverine and his status as a mutant.

While the revelation of Maverick's questionable alliances isn't much of a surprise, it's still disappointing. He's proven to be just as skilled of a soldier as he always was, working with Wolverine and Domino to target a group seeking to frame Krakoa. Still, Maverick remains an unaffiliated player who seems willing to work with anyone willing to pay him enough. While his full loyalty hasn't been revealed, he still seems willing to cooperate with the X-Desk, a government agency that has been monitoring Krakoa and seeking a way to contend with them. The fact that he can come and go from Krakoa as he pleases makes him all the more dangerous as a wildcard in the conflict.

While Maverick is certainly dangerous, it's the revelation of Wiz-Kid's apparent loyalty to Orchis that strikes harder. Wiz-Kid had been positioning himself as a major part of the mutant's future, helping devise amazing technologies that have helped bolster Krakoa. He even helped protect the Five during the events of King in Black, when their deaths could have given Orchis a serious advantage. But if his true loyalty lies with Gyrich instead of Krakoa, then the knowledge he has gained is likely being used to the benefit of Orchis. Both of these mutants could prove to be incredibly dangerous going forward, especially considering their skills and, more importantly, their knowledge.
