There can be no X-Men without the snikt-iest one of them all: James Howlett a.k.a. Logan a.k.a. Weapon X a.k.a. Wolverine. This Canadian mutant is a conflicted mess of thoughts, feelings and emotions — weaponized with an unbreakable skeleton, undeniable healing factor, and then there are those claws.

As part of the X-Men, Wolverine has had some violently delightful experiences. It can be safe to say that of everything that he has done, few of his adventures (whether real or psychological) have had a positive ending. Still, there have been a number of occasions in which he proves himself to be one of the good guys after all.

10 Best: A Blood Pact With Spider-Man

Wolverine and Spider-Man are an unlikely pair, but they have actually teamed up on several occasions. As expected, Peter bugs the hell out of Logan for most of their adventure, but they invariably emerge victorious at the end.

In Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine, a time diamond fiasco traps both of them in the 1700s, where they spend three years together. In a surprising move, Wolverine offers his cut hand to his new best friend, saying that they "will always butt heads," but as blood brothers from now on.

9 Worst: Inserts Himself Between Jean And Scott

One of the longest running love triangles in Marvel history is the one between Jean Grey, Scott Summers and Logan. While Scott and Jean were together first (in most versions, anyway), Logan's entry has added considerable tension to the relationship. To be clear, the tension is entirely on Scott's side; Jean doesn't mind having both a husband and a boyfriend.

The intrusion has led to altercations between the two men: they have even tried to kill each other at different times. Wolverine really doesn't know when to back off. But also, there is this new promising development that might solve the situation entirely.

8 Best: Takes Care Of Amiko Kobayashi

Amiko Kobayashi

Not many people know that Logan has an adopted Japanese daughter. When the child's mother dies after a Battleworld dragon rages through Tokyo, Logan swears that he will foster Amiko, as he is wracked with guilt at indirectly causing the sad event to occur.

Although he doesn't spend too much time with her, being a superhero and everything, his fiancée, Mariko Yashida takes on the responsibility of being Amiko's guardian. She lives a generally luxurious life, meeting her foster-father on his trips to Japan (and involving herself in the adventure that ensues.)

7 Worst: Kills Northstar (Twice)

Wolverine is really good at what he does, that's the problem. His mind is a fragmented mess from all the damage caused by the constant neurological reengineering, but that doesn't mean he should be so extra all the time. In X-Men: Age of Apocalypse, Northstar and his sister are killed by Wolverine (and his partner, X-23); this is excusable since they were attacked.

On the other hand, Hydra demands that Logan murder Kitty Pryde, one of his best friends, in cold blood to prove his loyalty — he actually attempts it, but she phases out at the last moment and poor Northstar gets half a dozen claws in his chest.

6 Best: Annual Mind Healing

It is often argued that Wolverine cannot help his bloodthirsty nature, that the blame lies on Weapon  — but he understands that his splintered psyche needs effort to heal.

He takes an annual trip to the forests present in Native American territory, in order to relive the story of the "two dogs: one good and one evil, but the one that wins is one who is fed the most." In the course of his meditative quest, Logan proves that he isn't as much an animal as he is human, even if he cannot help himself sometimes.

5 Worst: Marries Viper

Of all the weird relationships that occur in the X-Men comics, Wolverine's marriage to Viper is one of the most implausible. The only reason the pair get together in the first place is because Viper and her mentor, Seraph, make Logan "bend the knee" to her for saving his life earlier.

For a person who regularly boasts about his independence and lack of self-reliance, Wolverine foolishly agreed to marry her to help her seize the throne of Madripoor. Thankfully, he figures out a way to get a divorce (although it is far, far from amicable.)

4 Best: Divides The X-Men

The rivalry between Cyclops and Wolverine is eternal, but it isn't always about Jean. Sometimes it's just Scott being a power-hungry idiot. Logan is upset by Scott's lack of judgement, as the latter wants to militarize young mutants (he claims as a measure of self-defense.)

Wolverine has had enough — he quits, taking a group of mutants to the now-destroyed Xavier Institute. He founds a new academy, known as the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning (raising minor suspicions whether all this was about her after all.)

3 Worst: Murders Henry Pym

In the alternate reality, Earth-26111, Dr. Henry Pym plans to create the dangerous Ultron, as he does in Earth-616. Here, however, he is stopped dead in his tracks (literally) when future Wolverine comes in to stop the inevitable havoc that Ultron will cause. To avoid this, he kills the doctor.

Unforeseen consequences occur in the form of the Avengers breaking up after Pym's death, resulting in the sorceress, Morgan le Fay, taking control over (half) the world. The future does not look bright for Wolverine.

2 Best: Wolverine & The Wolverines

The Earth-811 variant of Wolverine is stolen away by the so-called Timebreakers, who create a team of different reality Wolverines to replace the earlier Exiles (including a somehow tamed zombie Wolverine.)

Unfortunately, this act takes place on Earth-127, which was dominated by a strange hybrid of Wolverine, Scarlet Warlock, Mesmero and Magneto, known as Brother Mutant. It takes some time, effort, and the last minute reveal of a group of allies, before the Wolverines are able to successfully rid the world of Brother Mutant.

1 Worst: Tortures Tsurayaba

Having murdered Mariko Yashida, Matsu'o Tsurayaba is on the receiving end of Wolverine's incandescent brand of justice: a pain that is simultaneously horrific and lingering. Logan takes his revenge by cutting off Tsurayaba's arm, then swears that he will return on every anniversary of his lover's death, and take just a little more each time.

After losing a number of parts (including arms, gallbladder, nose, ear, to name a few.) Tsurayaba's misery finally ends when Psylocke succeeds in calming Wolverine down, by asking him to take her life instead.
