The following contains spoilers for Wolverine #33, now on sale from Marvel Comics.

Wolverine's development in the Krakoa Era has largely focused on a reflection of his role as the X-Men's most lethal protector, and whether a man of violence like him can ever find peace. Even with the inroads he'd made personally, the machinations of Beast have complicated matters by turning Logan into the weapon he's worked so hard to move beyond. But even trying to get payback might have worse consequences in the long-run.

Wolverine is officially on the hunt for Beast in Wolverine #33 (by Benjamin Percy, Juan Jose Ryp, Frank D'Armata, and VC's Cory Petit), giving him the chance to enact revenge for Beast's recent acts of villainy. But that might also put him in the crosshairs of the United States, giving the government cause to believe he's been in cahoots with Beast all along. Logan's been quietly reliving one of his harshest experiences by becoming an enemy of the state all over again.

Wolverine is on a Desperate Hunt for the X-Men's Beast

Wolverine recruits Maverick to hunt Beast.

Even before he went rogue from Krakoa, Beast had been crossing serious moral lines. His decision to use Wolverine as a mindless killing machine was a ruthless one -- especially given his knowledge of the torture and trauma that Logan has had to suffer thanks to similar mindsets. Now that Beast has fully broken away from Krakoa, Wolverine is taking no time at all to hunt him down. Alongside a vengeful Maverick, Wolverine is throwing himself right into the thick of the hunt for Beast.

The problem is, he's not the only one hunting Beast. Wolverine's friend Jeff Bannister, furious at Beast's attempt to cover his tracks by assassinating him and his daughter, turns to his allies in X-Desk and alerts them to Beast's location. Alongside a sizable strike force, Bannister is quick to get involved in the hunt. He's also seemingly unaware of Wolverine's presence, something his allies seem unconcerned by. They could even see this as a fresh opportunity to take out Wolverine, and given recent events, it makes a certain amount of sense why they would view him as a major threat.

Wolverine is on the Verge of Becoming an Enemy Of The State - Again

The agents of X-Desk put a reticle on Wolverine in a speed boat mistaking him for a clone.

Wolverine's history is tragically defined in part by others using him as a weapon. Going all the way back to his days as a ruthless member of Team X and an experiment of the Weapon Plus program, Logan has been seen as a tool instead of a person. The "Enemy of the State" storyline from Wolverine #20-25 (by Mark Millar, John Romita Jr., Klaus Janson, Paul Mounts, and Rus Wooton) saw Logan captured and corrupted by the Hand into an agent of chaos, slaying hundreds before being brought down by the heroes. Beast's actions are reminiscent of that, creating a brutal Wolverine that has no restraint and then a slew of clones to carry on the work once Wolverine was freed of his control.

From an outside perspective, it may easily appear that Wolverine has been carrying out assassinations he was never a part of, and even the awareness of his clones could raise plenty of red flags whenever Logan appears on a mission. In many ways, Wolverine is reliving the events of "Enemy of the State" and its subsequent "Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." storyline, now hunting down the people who manipulated him into a monster. But the government may see him as the culprit of the crimes or at the very least as a very dangerous threat, potentially painting a very large target on his back. Even if Logan does get the chance to bring down his former friend, he may not get the opportunity to enjoy his freedom for very long without the CIA and their X-Desk trying to hunt him down next.
