The premiere super-team of the future versus Marvel's Merry Band of Mutants -- two of three popular super-teams in the 70s and 80s, it's obvious why the X-Men are the king of superhero teams. But that doesn't mean the Legion of Super-Heroes aren't worthy of respect, as they've been in the game for nearly 50 years. And despite multiple reboots, they keep coming back, refreshed for new generations.

If these two groups went at it, who would be the winner? For this list, the match is broken down based on some of their most iconic teammates, going at it in one-on-one matches to decide who will be the victor. The winner will be whoever has the most members of their super-team still standing.

10 COSMIC BOY VS. MAGNETO: MAGNETO

Rokk Krinn is pretty boss, as he managed to become a founding member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, leading the team when they were under the most scrutiny from the people and the United Planets.

But Magneto’s ability to manipulate the Earth’s magnetic poles are a different kind of power. We’ve seen him pull asteroids into the Earth’s orbit and pull the iron out of someone’s blood to make it into a weapon. Rokk’s got no chance against someone with this much control over his power.

9 LIGHTNING LAD VS. STORM

Garth is ... embarrassingly out of his league in this scenario. He can generate electric fields, which is neat, and he’s a key offensive member of the team in most scenarios, especially since he’s immune to electricity.

But what’s that mean to Storm, a woman who doesn’t control merely storms, but any form of weather in general? Beating a lightning storm is one thing, but beating a typhoon is another. He’s out of this fight faster than when he joined the team, and he’s a founder.

8 SATURN GIRL VS. EMMA FROST: EMMA FROST

Give Saturn Girl her respect -- certain versions of her have made her the most powerful telepath on the planet of telepaths. And in this respect, she might have more experience using her powers.

But from a physical standpoint, Emma Frost has been using her powers to manipulate people since she was a teenager. And even if this weren’t the case, Emma’s diamond form makes her immune to all telepathy, granting her a huge physical edge.

7 BRAINIAC 5 VS. BEAST: BRAINIAC 5

Beast is out of his league in this case. He’s going to try and come up with something, but on his best day, he can’t keep up with Brainiac 5. To begin with, DC technology already feels more advanced (on average) than Marvel’s.

Then you take this and shoot someone 1,000 years into the future? On top of this, Brainiac 5 is the most intelligent person from his era. Sure in pure strength, Hank might be stronger, but that’s meaningless considering he isn’t nearly powerful enough to crack Brainiac’s force field.

6 MON-EL VS. COLOSSUS: MON-EL

MON-EL good justice league members

Short of a telepath, anyone could’ve been in this spot and they still would get washed. Mon-El’s a Kryptonian, so essentially this might as well be “Superman vs. Colossus”.

The X-Men can’t beat the Juggernaut without using telepathy, what are they gonna do when one of their number has to solo a guy who’s got twice the Juggernaut’s strength, flight, heat vision, and super speed?

5 ULTRA BOY VS. ROGUE: ROGUE

rogue

Someone that drains power versus someone that swaps powers. Ultra Boy’s got the advantage if Rogue doesn’t have any powers going into things other than her ability to drain people.

But if she’s got her Ms. Marvel upgrade, the super strength and invulnerability will give her the edge until she can drain Ultra Boy’s abilities. After that, it’s pretty much a formality. As strong as Jo is, he can’t compete with someone who matched him AND could steal his powers.

4 WILDFIRE VS. CYCLOPS: WILDFIRE

LoSH Quiz Wildfire

Cyclops is the best leader out of anyone on either team. He’s arguably the best leader in superhero comics. But that’s not going to help him from getting this work. While Scott can fire concussive optic beams from his eyes, Wildfire’s body is sentient energy.

This power allowed him to slug it out with Superboy one time and actually come out as the victor. He’s got flight and energy manipulation -- Cyclops can survive for a while because he’s by far a better fighter and has more experience in utilizing tactics, but ultimately it’s Wildfire’s victory.

3 PHANTOM GIRL VS. KITTY PRYDE: KITTY PRYDE

Kitty Pryde Marauders feature

Phantom Girl’s intangibility is really cool, but Kitty blows her out of the water. She’s been doing this longer than almost anyone on either team, with the exception of Cyclops, as she’s one of the youngest people to join the X-Men and was leading the team when she was a teenager.

She’s gained better combat skills training with Wolverine and this fight ends the moment Kitty decides she needs to go handle something else.

2 TIMBER WOLF VS. WOLVERINE: WOLVERINE

These two have similar powers and costumes, but there’s a world of difference between them. Brin Londo has super strength and some superhuman agility, but this isn’t going to be enough to get him through a fight with Wolverine.

His claws have nothing on Wolverine’s adamantium and Wolverine’s healing factor is several times better than Timber Wolf’s, as he’s recovered from nuclear weapons. At best, Brin earns Wolverine’s respect for refusing to surrender, despite being defeated multiple times.

1 STAR BOY VS. GAMBIT: STAR BOY

Gambit’s one of those fan-favorite characters with powers so poorly defined, writers have been able to expand them. Like, his ability to tap into kinetic energy can also give him superhuman speed, strength, and agility.

But against Thom Kallor, this power isn’t exactly going to be readily available. Star Boy would just wind up crushing him under his own weight.
