WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Cable #5, by Gerry Duggan, Phil Noto and VC's Joe Sabino, on sale now.

At the start of Marvel's X of Swords crossover event, Cyclops, Jean Grey and Cable traveled to the Peak, the space station that serves as the headquarters for the Sentient World Observation and Response Department. S.W.O.R.D. is essentially the Earth's first line of defense when it comes to extra-terrestrial threats but when the three mutants arrived at the station, they found that it had been abandoned. The young Cable then used his sword, the Light of Galador, to power the station back on.

In the latest issue of Cable,  Scott, Jean and Cable investigate the Peak, in hopes of figuring out what happened to the crew, which numbered in the thousands. Unfortunately, they get their answer when they stumble upon a new alien life form that just may turn out to be Marvel's answer to the Borg from Star Trek.

Borg Drones Star Trek

In the Star Trek franchise, the Borg are a collective alien species. They are comprised entirely of organic life forms that have been given extensive cybernetic enhancements, and they all operate in a drone-like manner to serve the collective. They are essentially a hive-mind, and none of the Borg have an individual personality. Their goal is to assimilate any other life forms it comes across, and add all of their knowledge to its own. The Borg are a frightening presence in the Star Trek universe, and they easily rank as one of the most dangerous species in the universe.

Now, in Cable #5, Marvel introduces the Vescora, and they have many similarities to the Borg.

Cyclops, Jean Grey and Cable first encounter the Vescora after restoring power to the S.W.O.R.D. space station. Behind a welded door, they discover a large gate that seems to have been constructed from cybernetic bodies. Once the gate is activated, it starts glowing green and lets in an army of aliens who are wearing full, black robotic armors. Jean Grey explains that they are essentially a virus, and that their only purpose is to "invade, replicate and move on."

Vescora X-Men Cable

Their numbers are massive, and they all follow the same goal. This is truly similar to the Borg. In fact, the Vescora's armors are colored in black, and they shine green, a color scheme shared by the Borg. What's more, the Borg introduced the famous "Resistance is futile" line, and the Vescora have their very own catchphrase: "Cleanse. Dissect. Learn."

In Star Trek, the Borg came from far away and it appears to be the same for the Vescora. Their exact origin is unclear, but it appears they have traveled from another dimension, a mysterious place that isn't fully explained.

Cable, Jean and Scott are able to hold the invasion back and they are only able to stop it after once again shutting down power to the station. The threat has been contained, but only for the time being. There is still much left to learn about the Vescora, their introduction here was no accident. Surely, these new aliens will return to prove they are as dangerous and frightening as the Borg.
