Some of the most popular characters created for the Ultimate Marvel Universe, like Miles Morales and Monica Chang, were eventually introduced in or moved to Earth-616, but some others haven't been so lucky.

Marvel's Ultimate X-Men titles were no exception to this, and they featured several heroes who never found their way to the main Marvel Universe. Moreover, several characters who joined the team in the Ultimate Universe never joined the X-Men or any of Marvel's other mutant groups in the main Marvel Universe. Now, we're taking a closer look at both types of X-Men and what happened to them.

Magician

Magician Ultimate X-Men

The Magician, Elliot Boggs, was created by Robert Kirkman and Tom Raney and first appeared in Ultimate X-Men #66. Elliot was a fan of the X-Men, so much so that when his own mutation manifested he subconsciously used his reality-altering powers to construct a scenario in which he would be invited to join the team.

But after Charles Xavier and Nick Fury discovered how he was changing reality he battled the X-Men, Wolverine eventually had to kill him. However, it is subsequently revealed that Elliot survived and while talking to Kitty Pryde (without her realizing) he reveals that he's leaving to seek isolation.

Syndicate

Syndicate was a pair of mutant brothers, Luke and Matthew, who shared the same body, with one head for each of them and an additional arm. Created by Brian K. Vaughn and Steve Dillon, Syndicate first appeared in Ultimate X-Men #58. Charles Xavier encountered them while they were attempting a bank robbery to pay for an operation their sick sister needed. Xavier foiled them but rather than turn them in, he offered Syndicate the opportunity to work for him investigating the Hellfire Club in exchange for paying for their sister's operation.

When this mission was accomplished Syndicate moved into the Xavier School, but soon after they were killed by William Stryker's mutant-hating forces during Ultimatum.

Blackheath

Samuel Smithers, Blackheath, was created by Brian Wood and Paco Medina and first appeared in Ultimate Comics: X-Men #12. Sam was a prisoner in a mutant concentration camp and became an important player in both the war against the Sentinels and the mutant government. As the Ultimate Universe version of the minor mutant villain Plantman, Sam's powers included controlling and communicating with plants, which became very useful once the surviving mutants were given a reservation in which to live freely.

Much like their Marvel Universe counterparts, the Ultimate mutants formed a partnership with their new home, a sentient being called Utopia. Sam's abilities made him the ideal choice to monitor the needs of the country itself so that Utopia and its inhabitants stayed healthy. His experiments with Utopia's vegetation helped make the mutant nation an economic power. While he occasionally sided with opponents of Kitty Pryde, Sam always kept the needs of Utopia at heart.

Firestar (Liz Allan)

While both Elizabeth "Liz" Allan and Firestar are well-known characters from the main Marvel Universe, they are two very distinct characters there. The difference is that in the Ultimate Universe they're the same while in the main Marvel Universe they're separate people. Created by Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley, and Bill Jemas, the Ultimate version of Liz first appeared in Ultimate Spider-Man #1. She served as a Spider-Man supporting character like the original Liz before discovering that she was a mutant with pyrokinetic abilities and that her father was the Blob, after which she joined the X-Men.

Following Ultimatum and the X-Men's disbanding Liz briefly attempted to return to regular life. She eventually joined the covert mutant team Jean Grey formed for S.H.I.E.L.D. but defected to the city of Tian.

Guardian

Derek Morgan as Guardian from the Ultimate X-Men

Derek Morgan was able to transform between his regular human state and a bird-like form complete with wings and talons, which also gave him increased strength. He was created by Jeph Loeb and Arthur Adams and first appeared in Ultimate Comics: X #3. After a brief stint as a vigilante, Derek was recruited into Jean Grey's team. After Utopia defeated Tian Derek was allowed to come live in Utopia with other Tian mutants. Following Secret Wars, Derek was one of several Ultimate Universe mutants to find themselves displaced on Earth-616. He was brainwashed to serve Miss Sinister and eventually killed by her in X-Men: Blue.
