WARNING: The following contains spoilers for X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #2, available now from Marvel.

After the apparent death of the Scarlet Witch, The Trial of Magneto has the nation of Krakoa on edge, with the investigation into the death of the longtime Avenger having the potential to raise a whole new slew of questions about the future of the mutant island, how it operates in a crisis, and what secrets can it keep from the outside world. Things were already tense enough though before the shocking ending of the miniseries' second issue, which hinted that the Scarlet Witch wasn't truly dead after all.

And now, the Scarlet Witch has seemingly been restored to life in X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #2 by Leah Williams, Lucas Werneck, Edgar Delgado, and VC's Clayton Cowles, and it only raises more questions about the death and apparent resurrection of the hero.

X-Men Trial Scarlet Witch Return 2

X-Men: The Trial of Magneto focuses on the murder mystery and subsequent investigation into the death of the Scarlet Witch. Killed the night of the Hellfire Gala event and seemingly strangled by an unknown assailant, the evidence increasingly points to Magneto, which results in a battle between him and the assembled forces of Krakoa that left the Master of Magnetism severely injured by a furious Quicksilver. Despite the telepathic intrusions of Xavier and Hope Summers, there's no clear way to discern mentally whether Magneto is truly culpable in the crime. X-Factor's investigation leads them to Magneto's home shortly before the Hellfire Gala -- confirming he seemingly stole a Cerebro helmet.

Things quickly escalate when the Avengers arrive on Krakoa to claim Wanda's body from the mutant nation. Because the Quiet Council ultimately voted to not resurrect Wanda, it seemed like the only proper way to respect Wanda's passing, as well as appease her loved ones. But thanks to a telepathic nudge from Hope, Magneto went on the offensive -- donning his classic villainous costume and fighting the Avengers on his own to keep them from reaching her body. Even as the battle takes a turn when Magneto threatens the life of Northstar's human husband Kyle, the Master of Magnetism ultimately drops his guard, seemingly confesses to the crime and demands to be taken into custody before he brings down Krakoa itself.

That is when things take a serious turn -- because Scarlet Witch descends from the Boneyard with the sun behind her, thanking everyone for the concern but arguing it was unnecessary. She then quickly moves over to Vision and passionately kisses him, which comes as a surprise to everyone, considering Vision and Wanda had recently been separated. It's a sudden return for the Scarlet Witch and one that comes with little explanation.

It's entirely possible the mystical elements that have been plaguing Wanda since her death allowed her to make her way back to the land of the living. It's also possible Hope egged Magneto into a fight he couldn't win just to stall long enough for the Five to go against the Quiet Council and restore Scarlet Witch -- codifying the precedent they established with clones as their law. If that's the case, then Wanda's mind would likely have been restored using an old back-up copy from Cerebro that's considerably out of date.

The mystery of Wanda's murder will likely only become more complicated upon her return -- especially with Mystique (one of the leading suspects in the crime) potentially hinting at her own involvement and awareness of the situation as she watches Wanda return to the assembled heroes with an intrigued expression. Wanda's death being short-lived makes a certain amount of sense -- especially considering her involvement in the upcoming Darkhold storyline and recent prominence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- but the full circumstances of her resurrection remain a mystery that could continue to sew discord across Krakoa.
