The latest movie in the X-Men franchise Logan blew us away with its inspiring story, excellent direction and superb acting. Hugh Jackman's last outing as the Wolverine may well be his best performance in the franchise. However, Logan is far from being the only critically acclaimed X-Men movie. The first two parts of the original trilogy, as well as X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Deadpool were all released to extremely positive reviews. But X-Men is one of those franchises that either gets it exactly right or horribly wrong, as is the case with X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

But we're not here to discuss the quality of the X-Men movies. Our task today is to have some fun with the X-Men movie timeline. If not make it a bit more comprehensible. If you have been following the franchise you know that X-Men: Days of Future Past basically erased a good share of the movies that came before it. With films being released out of chronological order and the existence of two timelines, keeping track of what took place where can be a difficult task. But instead of over-analyzing every little detail we should just relax with these 15 hilarious X-Men timeline memes.

15 FORMING THE X-MEN IS EXHAUSTING

X-Men Xavier Age

X-Men: Days of Future Past did good by erasing some of the franchise's less successful films, however it also turned the X-Men movie timeline into a hot mess. A particularly curious, if not confusing, thing about the X-Men timeline is Charles Xavier’s age. Or rather, his extremely rapid aging. Below is a screenshot of Professor X in X-Men: Last Stand dated 1986, while the above is a still from X-Men: Days of Future Past dated 1973. Seven years doesn’t seem nearly enough for a person to age that much.

The Internet of course loves to poke fun at movie plot holes such as this one which has produced a number of similar memes. The only rational conclusion the collective wisdom of the online community managed to come up with is that forming the X-Men is an exhausting task.

14 GOOD GUY APOCALYPSE

X-Men Good Guy Apocalypse Meme

It is the age of remakes and reboots. Hollywood has apparently finally run out of fresh ideas and has nothing else to do but remake old movies and reboot dead franchises. It's safe to say that X-Men: Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine essentially killed the X-Men franchise and Fox is now desperately trying to breathe new life into it.

This hilarious meme takes advantage of Fox's scheming plans and Apocalypse's speech from X-Men: Apocalypse, where he promises to bring about the end of the world and build a new one from the ashes. Clever fans quickly took note of his words and applied it to what 20th Century Fox did with the X-Men franchise. By undoing the original X-Men movie timeline with X-Men: Days of Future Past, Fox got the chance to start over and redeem themselves with movies such as Deadpool and Logan.

13 DOC AND THE X-MEN TIMELINE

X-Men Doc Exsplains X-Men Timeline Meme

Back to the Future is one of the most well-known time travel stories. Doc and Marty McFly use their unforgettable time machine, a modified DeLorean powered by plutonium stolen from Libyan terrorists, to travel back and forth in time. And as time travel goes, things inevitably get real messy, real fast. But even though Doc is a certified expert on all things time travel, not even he can understand the X-Men timeline.

So, if you’re not sure what the hell is going on in the X-Men movies, no need to worry. As you can see even Doc has given up on it. What's more, he doesn't seem to be all that upset either, so why the hell are we still trying to unravel the mystery?

12 A THIRD TIMELINE?

X-Men Plot Devices Meme

To say that everything about the original X-Men trilogy was utterly horrible would be a gross misstatement. However, in the spirit of being honest, we have to say that killing off almost all of the X-Men in X-Men: Last Stand wasn't exactly the best idea. Clearly, 20th Century Fox gathered as much and decided to fix the problem by basically undoing everything.

So, with X-Men: Days of Future Past the X-Men that were killed during Last Stand were brought back and all was right with the world, right? Well, not for long. Just two movies later, the studio killed off the X-Men once again. Apparently, this didn't only catch the attention of the fans. Wolverine seems to have noticed that the studio is running out of plot devices. But hey, they can always create a third timeline. It worked wonders for The CW's The Flash.

11 WOLVERINE: REDEMPTION

X-Men Wolverine Redemption Meme

The original X-Men trilogy pretty much went to hell with X-Men: Last Stand. In an attempt to revive the franchise Fox started the Origins series with X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The movie managed to ruin Wolverine, Sabertooth, Gambit and Deadpool all at once. Quite an accomplishment indeed, but not something you aim for.

Fans were pretty vocal about their dislike of the movie and every subsequent Wolverine movie was met with skepticism. However, once Logan hit the theaters all was forgiven. We finally got the Wolverine movie we always wanted. But the best part is, the first one is now completely erased from existence thanks to Days of Future Past. Even if Wolverine's trip to the past didn't exactly save the mutants, it did undo the franchise's worst movie which is more than enough.

10  CONFUSED WOLVERINE

X-Men Logan Timeline Meme

While Logan was an outstanding movie in every possible way, it was at times confusing. Upon its release everyone and their mother was talking about where Logan fits in the X-Men timeline. The fans analyzed everything from connections to the past movies to Charles Xavier’s hair or lack thereof. Discussions on whether Logan’s grim future takes place after Days of Future Past’s happy ending spread like wildfire.

Weighing in on the issue, Logan’s director James Mangold commented that the movie takes place five years after anything depicted in the X-Men movies, which means five years after Days of Future Past. Perhaps, Mangold should have said this to Wolverine since he seems to be more confused than the fans. What with all the time travel and non-linear storytelling, poor Logan can’t seem to figure out what timeline he’s in.

9 SYSTEM OVERLOAD

X-Men Iron Man Chronology

Telling a story out of chronological order is not all that uncommon. A great number of successful and critically acclaimed movies did exactly that. Christopher Nolan who worked on the Dark Knight Trilogy often employs this technique. The order of X-Men movies is also a non-linear one, with the original X-Men trilogy preceding X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: First Class, that chronologically should come before it.

To top it all off, X-Men: Days of Future Past created a new timeline, which as far as we know undid all previous movies except for X-Men: First Class. Trying to figure all this out can be an exhausting task. Memes of people trying to understand the X-Men timeline come in all shapes and sizes, such as this one of Iron Man asking his good friend Jarvis to help him out.

8 WHY DID YOU CHANGE THE TIMELINE?

X-Men Trading Futures Meme

If time travel stories have thought us anything it’s that you shouldn’t try to prevent someone’s death. The way these stories usually go the person will either day no matter what you do, or if you do save them the consequences will be dire. Apparently, no one informed the X-Men of this unwritten rule of time travel before they decided to send Wolverine’s consciousness into the past to prevent Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask.

The rise of Trask's Sentinels brought an end to mutants in this apocalyptic future and the decision was made to go back in time and change the future. Wolverine saved the mutants, but not for long. Just five years after the events of Days of Future Past mutants are once again eradicated and Wolverine seems pretty pissed off that his hard work was in vain. Can't say we blame him.

7 STOP COMPLAINING AND ENJOY

X-Men WTF Timeline Meme

Logan may well be the best X-Men movie thus far, with all due respect to X-Men: Days of Future Past. Described as a violent but surprisingly thoughtful superhero movie that defies genre conventions, Logan was released to overwhelmingly positive critical reception. The movie had a number of sad scenes, but watching the elderly Charles Xavier struggle with dementia had to be one of the hardest to watch.

However, despite all that, old Xavier did provided us with lots of entertainment. The Internet, on the other hand, came up with hilarious memes, such as this one. The confused Professor X asks Logan to explain what timeline they're in. And Logan's response comes in form of what all of us have been thinking for quite some time. Just shut up and enjoy.

6 WELL NOW YOU'VE DONE IT

X-Men Reverse Meme

Meddling with time always comes at a price. Something we witness day in and day out on The CW’s Flash. Every time you meddle with time there are bound to be repercussions. The time travelling from Days of Future Past might have fixed the horrendous incidents such as X-Men: Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, however, it may have also had other unwanted consequences.

Welcome to the third X-Men timeline. One in which everything is reversed and everyone's at the same place at the same time. There's something so wrong yet so right about this hilarious picture. But the question is, did only the actors switch or did the characters switch too? Do we now have the L-Men? Or is it E-Men. Hope not, doesn't quite have that ring.

5 SUDDEN REALIZATION

X-Men Keanu Reeves

Kenau Reeves' shocked face is probably one of the most widely used memes on the internet. The "Conspiracy Keanu" Meme, featuring a still of Keanu Reeves from the 1989 movie Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is mostly used for paranoid conjectures and absurd philosophical questions. However, the person who made this meme used Keanu to question whether their understanding of the X-Men movie timeline was in fact correct.

Obviously, this realization about the X-Men movie timeline was too much for this poor soul to bear so they had to express their bewilderment through the universal language of memes. Well, considering the complexity of the X-Men timeline it's no wonder someone got inspired enough to make a "Conspiracy Keanu" meme to share their frustration with the world.

4 DAMMIT BARRY

10-X-Men-Barry-Did-It-Meme copy

Barry Allen has been busy these past three years traveling back and forth in time and making slight, and not so slight, changes to the timeline. The consequences of Barry’s time-travel adventures have proven to be far-reaching. Soon enough, everyone started blaming Barry for everything that gets messed up in the Arrowverse, but also further.

Arrowverse is not the only universe to have a messed up timeline. Wherever there’s time travel, there’s bound be a mess. The X-Men franchise may have been revived with X-Men: First Class, but it’s timeline was turned on its head with X-Men: Days of Future Past. And Wolverine's third solo movie, Logan, didn't exactly simplify things. Many are wondering what the hell is happening with the X-Men timeline and why it's so messed up. Apparently, some have found the answer.

3 ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY

X-Men One Does Not Simply

When the Council of Elrond revealed that the ring must be destroyed by being thrown into the fires of Mount Doom located deep in the territory of Mordor, Boromir was quick to point out the impossible nature of such a task by speaking those memorable words, "One does not simply walk into Mordor". And the rest, as they say, is history. This Lord of the Rings quote became a very popular meme, used whenever you want to emphasize the difficulty of a certain endeavor.

Grasping the X-Men movie timeline is most certainly a daunting task. While everyone was busy re-watching the movies and developing theories the person who created this meme decided to alleviate our pain by point out the difficulty of the task before us.

2 LET ME EXPLAIN THE X-MEN TIMELINE

X-Men Explaining The X-Men Timeline

Going to the movies by yourself can be pretty boring. On the other hand, inviting a friend to a comic book movie whilst knowing they know nothing of the source material or the movies that came before the one you're watching can be an even more painful experience. If you want to avoid constant questions while you're trying to enjoy the movie, you're gonna wanna give your friend a crash course on the material.

However, this is never an easy task, let alone if you're trying to explain the X-Men movie timeline to a person who has literally no clue about the X-Men movies. If you were to embark on such an adventure, this meme gives you a pretty good idea of how you'd probably look.

1 THE CURIOUS CASE OF WOLVERINE BUTTON

X-Men The Curious Case of Wolverine

Having two actors playing the same character can get pretty confusing. However, as much as we love Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen, we're not so sure they could pass for a couple of 30-year-olds. On the other hand, Wolverine is a whole different story. With decelerated aging ability, Wolverine's not supposed to change all that much and so it makes sense that he's always played by the same actor.

However, while Wolverine does come with decelerated aging, actor Hugh Jackman does not. While Jackman does look impressive for his age and arguably makes a better Wolverine now that he's older, it still impossible not to notice that Wolverine seems to be older in 1973 than in 2000. So, is Wolverine aging backwards? Well, this hilarious meme seems to suggest that what we've got is a Curious Case of Wolverine Button.
