The current era of X-Men comics has seen numerous mutant technologies developed that have quickly and radically changed the face of the entire Marvel Universe. Backed by the collective mutant population of Earth, Krakoa has been able to create Mysterium, terra-form Mars, and genuinely change life on the planet Earth for the better. But perhaps their most important advancement (and secret to the greater world) might be complicated by internal politics on the island.
The Five just made a serious power move in New Mutants #21 (by Vita Ayala, Rod Reis, VC's Travis Lanham & Joe Caramagna), setting them up to not only revive clones going forward but potentially set up further conflict with the Quiet Council.
The Five have been one of the most important developments of the Krakoa-era. The mutant nation, in House of X #5 by Jonathan Hickman and Pepe Larraz, discovered that through the use of five specific mutants working in concert, they could effectively create a new body for any fallen mutant. Utilizing both the DNA stores of Mister Sinister and the telepathic copies of minds taken by Cerebro, the Five -- Tempus, Hope, Egg, Elixir, and Proteus -- can create an entirely new body for any mutant who has died and effectively give them a do-over. This has brought resurrection to Krakoa, allowing numerous mutants the chance to give their lives for their homeland, only to be promptly restored to full health not long after.
This makes the Five some of the most important people on Krakoa. They are heralded as heroes by the majority of the nation, and S.W.O.R.D. commander Abigail Brand has very specific plans to protect them above all costs in case of a serious attack on Earth (as revealed during the course of King in Black). But that hasn't translated to full authority for the group. They've been forced to petition the Quiet Council -- the actual ruling body of Krakoa -- whenever they want to go against their wishes. The Quiet Council has also laid down edicts based on their votes, preventing the Five from resurrecting the likes of Madelyne Pryor or the Scarlet Witch. Even Beast -- with the authority granted him by the Quiet Council as the leader of X-Force -- forced them to tweak the revival of Omega Red to fit his schemes.
But in New Mutants #21, the Five are revealed to have reached a breaking point. Due to the question of whether or not clones should have the ability to be restored to life or if that goes against the rules against having more than one copy of any one mutant, there have been some grumblings in the younger generation. Specifically, they fear that their friend Scout would be kept from being resurrected after her body is discovered in the aftermath of the Hellfire Gala. This led them to break into the Five's area of Krakoa and try to force them to revive Scout. Arguing that having your own mind and personality justifies you as your own person -- and pointing towards Cebrero backing them up as their own people -- the Five announce via formal letter that they will now revive clones, regardless of the Council's response.
This is a potential game-changer for a number of people on Krakoa. It immediately goes into effect with Scout -- who is promptly revived and helps the group realize the Shadow King has been manipulating events. Even though her sister had been revived before her, Scout isn't an active agent of Krakoa -- making the fact that the Five would revive her a huge statement. This could lead to the resurrection of powerful and often heroic mutants like Genesis (the heroic clone of Apocalypse), but could also allow people like Havok to finally resurrect former villains like Madelyne Pryor. It's also important as another sign of in-fighting on Krakoa, which threatens to leave the nation vulnerable to the upcoming events of Inferno. But it's an vital step for the Five to take in terms of gaining autonomy and genuine influence.
