WARNING: The following contains spoilers for X-Men #18 by Jonathan Hickman, Mahmud Asrar, Sunny Gho & VC's Clayton Cowles, on sale now

There are a handful of mutants out there who possess the ability to duplicate the abilities of others. Mutants like Rogue and Mimic have had various amounts of time in the spotlight, but it might be time for a recently resurrected young mutant to step up in a big way with his own variant of those powers.

With his powers actually quietly receiving a boost following his resurrection by the Five, Synch from Generation X might have become Krakoa's ultimate deterrent, as X-Men #18 proves.

X-Men Powers Synch 1

Everett Thomas was one of the many young mutants targeted by the cybernetic threat known as the Phalanx, discovering he had the ability to duplicate the powers of other mutants nearby. Joining with Generation X, Synch was a consistent and dependable member of the teen team -- up until he was forced to sacrifice himself to save a group of human students at the Massachusetts Academy from a bombing. Synch was among the first mutants revived by the Five -- with the X-Men reasoning that his abilities could make him ideal for assisting the Five -- and has been adapting to the way life has changed for the X-Men since his demise.

He's also been assigned to the X-Men team (alongside Wolverine and Darwin) to investigate the Children of the Vault. Synch was previously limited in his duplication abilities, largely only being capable of copying the powers of other mutants and only while in their direct vicinity. It was hypothesized he could eventually become stronger back when he was alive for the first time, but the key to that seems to have been a resurrection. As discovered by Cecilia Reyes, it appears that resurrection results in a small increase in the potential power of mutants. She discovered this change in Synch, noting that his potential power has increased since his earlier form.

He proves as much during his encounter with the Children of the Vault, revealing that he can now also duplicate the powers of other super-powered beings like the Children of the Vault, using their powers against them. Synch's power boost elevates his sheer potential far beyond even what being able to duplicate other powers would allow. Now, Synch can seemingly copy the powers of anyone -- making him the ultimate counter for any offensive thrown at Krakoa. While the limits of this ability still need to be explored -- such as whether or not Synch could duplicate mystical powers as well or just biological ones -- this still means that Synch could serve as an effective balance to any enemy sent to Krakoa.

He could duplicate the abilities of anyone, with his upgraded powers now operating without him even realizing it. He could even continue to grow in his control over his abilities, potentially learning how to retain them for longer periods of time or even possibly combine them into his own personal power combinations -- i.e. mutant technologies. If Synch is able to survive his mission into the Vault, he could even become a one-man deterrent for super-powered enemies. With his ability to copy anyone's abilities, he could potentially become a powerhouse in one moment, and even figure out how to adapt to the powers in ways the enemy couldn't predict. Synch's abilities made him a potent utility player in general for the X-Men, but this is a major advancement for the young hero.
