WARNING: The following contains spoilers for SWORD #1 by Al Ewing, Valerio Schiti, Marte Gracia & VC's Ariana Maher, on sale now.

In the aftermath of X of Swords, the X-Men have transformed the derelict Peak -- the former base of operations for the cosmic-minded SHIELD branch known as SWORD -- into a new base of operations for their explorations beyond the Earth. This means recruiting a mix of famous and obscure mutants to help run the station -- even beyond the Six.

Who are all the mutants who make up the staff of the Peak?

STATION COMMANDER

X-Men SWORD The Six 2

After the chaos of Empyre, former S.W.O.R.D. commander Abigail Brand resigned from her position at the head of Alpha Flight and returned to the new incarnation of her former organization. Newly designed as the "mutant space program," Brand is quickly named Station Commander, while Magneto has been named the representative of the Quiet Council to the program.

Brand makes sure to remind Magneto during his tour of the Peak that S.W.O.R.D. is not an arm of Krakoa but instead an independent entity that works with the Quiet Council instead of just FOR Krakoa. It's an important distinction and one that could eventually lead to some tensions between Brand and the power players on Krakoa. But it also elevates Brand to a certain place of autonomous authority within the current mutant culture, along with the likes of Cyclops (who can still rally an army of X-Men when need be).

TECHNOLOGY/ENGINEERING & MEDICAL/ENERGY RESOURCES

At the moment, there's only one member of the Peak's Technology/Engineering branch: Taki Matsya aka Wiz Kid. Wiz Kid is a technical genius, with the power of technoformation: in essence, his technopathic powers allow him to easily understand and modify any form of technology -- including the plant-based Krakoa bio-technology. Because of this, Wiz-Kid is vital to the continued adaptation of the Peak for Krakoa purposes, as well as playing a part directly in the Six as "the Control." The tech-team could eventually grow, however.

There is no listed medical team for Peak at the moment, but one man does represent Energy Resources -- Fabian Cortez. Fabian Cortez was a traitorous member of the Acolytes, publicly championing Magneto while plotting to take more power for himself. Both Brand and Magneto admit they'd want someone else for the role if possible and are actively searching for someone to take his position. But Cortez's ability to augment other mutant powers makes him crucial to the Six as a source of energy while still giving him enough responsibility to keep him busy -- at least for now.

LOGISTICS

The Logistics team is composed of six different teleporters, all of whom could easily move back and forth between the Peak and locations such as Krakoa. They're also the six members who make up one aspect of the Six: helping give Krakoa the new-found ability to collect resources from across the multiverse. Manifold (also known as the Quintican) is essentially the leader of the department -- which makes sense, given his level of experience he has with various groups, such as the Secret Warriors and the Avengers.

The other five members of the group are all established and powerful teleporters. This includes Blink, Lila Cheney, Gateway, Vanisher, and Amelia Voght, all of whom have different levels of teleportation. However, when pooling their powers together can help create a portal powerful enough for the Six to make their way through the multiverse. Notably, this seems to include Voght using her powers to turn the bodies of each teleporting figure into a smoke-like element (which is an aspect of her own specific teleportation powers) as they go through the process of teleporting the Six.

DIPLOMACY/NEGOTIATION

As the new space-based branch of Earth, Brand makes it clear how important it is for the Peak to have strong relationships with the rest of the universe. This means having diplomats on staff to contend with any visitors or possible conflicts. Brand seems to have found a strong figure for this role in Frenzy. A former Acylote and eventually a member of the X-Men during the Decimation period, Frenzy has grown from a brash brawler into a level-headed and confident figure -- even having Armor under her wing as an Ambassador-In-Training when the young mutant is not participating as a member of the Six.

Frenzy has been shown already succeeding at her position and earning the respect of Paibok. Paibok was formerly known as the Power Skrull, and for a time was an enemy of the Fantastic Four -- even fighting as a member of the Fearsome Foursome and helped to mastermind the plot to replace Alicia Masters with the Skrull spy, Lyja. However, in the new Skrull/Kree Empire, he's been reassigned as a diplomat, possibly for the same reason as Super-Skrull -- to force the former villain to change the galaxy for the better through peaceful means.

SECURITY

Thanks to the countless threats that could attack the Peak from across the cosmos -- as well as any number of problems that could arise on the station itself at any given time -- it makes sense to have a security team on staff to watch over the Peak. Led by Cable -- who Brand refers to as Director Summers -- the security team serves as the welcoming party to any guests to the station. It's proof that Cable is at least trying to move on beyond the emotional lows he felt during the course of X of Swords after Bei defeated him.

Cable has two mutants working underneath him, both of whom have previously been antagonists to the X-Men and their allies. Random -- who is capable of shape-shifting his body and can even transform his arms into weapons -- and Risque -- who can minimize objects with an implosive field -- have both been accepted by the new Krakoa and now have found places within one of the group's most important organizations. Risque is even a member of the Six.

OBSERVATION

Observation and Analysis is perhaps the most mysterious department of the Peak at the moment. The department is nominally led by a Psionic Analyst, which suggests that a powerful telepath besides Cable will have a major role within the future of the group. However, the identity of the figure has been hidden behind a black space within the S.W.O.R.D. roster presented to readers. There are plenty of powerful figures who could fill this role -- including Jean Grey, who recently stepped down from the Quiet Council as part of the fallout of X of Swords.

Instead, the only member of the department who is introduced is Peeper, who serves as Visual Analyst. This is also the responsibility he uses while operating as a member of the Six. Pepper was briefly a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and Mutant Force and was actually one of the few mutants to retain their powers following the events of House of M -- before he was killed by Predator X. However, following his resurrection he's found a new role as an important member of the Peak's infrastructure and the Six.
