WARNING: The following contains spoilers for S.W.O.R.D. #7, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

After being named the Regent of Mars -- and therefore the galactically recognized monarch of the Sol System -- veteran X-Men leader Storm has taken a major step up in the estimations of the galaxy. Part of these responsibilities entails serving as a diplomat in function, such as her dinner with Latverian Monarch (and recent addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy), Doctor Doom.

Their dinner on Planet Arakko in S.W.O.R.D. #7 by Al Ewing, Stefano Caselli, Protobunker's Fer Sifuentes-Sujo, and VC's Ariana Maher ends up not just teasing the future of how their nations interact with one another, but also harkens back to a classic issue of Uncanny X-Men where the pair shared a similar dinner -- with very different results.

Storm Doctor Doom X-Men Dinner 2

The most famous dinner shared by Doom and Storm occurred in the three-part storyline that ran from Uncanny X-Men #143-#145 by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum, and Joe Rubinstein. Storm attends the ballet with Kitty Pryde's teacher Stevie Hunter -- and is ambushed by Miss Locke, an associate of Arcade. She reveals to the Omega-Level Mutant that she has kidnapped many of the X-Men's closest associates, and will only release them if the X-Men can rescue Arcade from Doom. Assembling a team of X-Men while the rest of the roster contends with the threats of Murder-World, Storm rushed to Latveria to confront the villainous tyrant. There, she was surprised to find a surprisingly hospitable Doom, who invited her to share dinner with him and discuss the matter at hand.

Storm and Doom share something of an attraction over the meal, but Doom is still offended by the X-Men's invasion of his country and captures her and her teammates. Doom traps Storm in a body-tight chrome prison -- a hellish ordeal for the claustrophobic mutant to suffer. Luckily, Storm's immense power allows her to eventually break free of the prison, and her teammates overcome their traps and challenges as well. The conflict ended with Doom and Storm agreeing to wipe the slate clean for their next meeting.

Storm Doctor Doom X-Men Dinner 1

In S.W.O.R.D. #7, the pair have a new discussion on Planet Arakko. Sharing a meal alongside a newly created lake, Storm admits it is in part to show Doom that she's willing to play Queen by the standards that he's become accustomed. Referencing their dinner from years earlier, Doom tries to evade blame by arguing it was merely a Doombot that had suffered internal faults that resulted in it turning so violently against her and her allies. Doom tries to flirt openly with Storm, commenting that it's nice to see her as a true queen instead of as someone's bride -- referring to her time by Black Panther's side as the monarch of Wakanda. But this prompts Storm to make reference to his own marriage -- calling out the chaos that came about after his disastrous attempt to wed his servant, Victorious.

The dinner soon turns to the topic of Mysterium and where it's from, and Doom offers to help the mutants learn more about the full power and potential of Mysterium -- albeit for an undisclosed price. He also casually insults their ability to control the Mysterium they've created, visibly annoying the mutant queen. When she receives a telepathic warning from Brand about the Dormammu invasion from across the universe, she abruptly ends the dinner with a strike of lightning and a reminder to Doom that the mutant race has risen faster than anyone could have realized or prepared for, and that his offer is appreciated -- but denied. This sets up an interesting relationship between Arakko, Krakoa, and Latveria that is sure to be explored in the future.
