Since joining the X-Men team, Storm has proven herself to be one of the team's most powerful and important members time and time again. Her strategic brilliance, compassion and hand-to-hand combat skills made her not only a good hero, but a great leader. Plus, her Omega-level mutant powers once had her worshiped as a weather-controlling goddess.

One of the best displays of her power happened back in 1981's Uncanny X-Men #147 by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum and Josef Rubinstein. The X-Men had been kidnapped by Doctor Doom and taken to his castle where he held them captive. Each member of the team was kept in separate cells, specially created by Doom to challenge their mutant abilities.

Once her teammates freed themselves, they made their way to where Doctor Doom, Arcade and a robot version of Storm awaited them. After Wolverine took out the Storm-bot, Doom revealed where he'd been holding the real Storm.

She had been transformed into a chrome statue. Although she could not move or speak, her mind was aware of her entombment. As a woman whose only fear is enclosed spaces, this was a terrifying experience. Unconscious in her frozen state, her powers were still activated as a defense system as the raging storm outside the castle proved.

When Wolverine and Nightcrawler returned her to normal, she was anything but. In her fear and panic, Storm had become one with the planet, accessing the full power of Earth's natural forces and becoming much closer to the goddess she was once worshiped as. Though Storm's powers were intense before, this was an entirely new level. Dismissing friend and foe alike, her power easily knocked everyone down.

In recent events prior to this issue, the X-Men had dealt with the Phoenix Force taking over their friend Jean Grey. They were reminded of the Phoenix Force giving Jean unimaginable power and it crushing the woman they knew under its weight. Speaking to Storm, trying to save her from the same fate, her teammates pleaded with her and reminded her of Jean.

Screaming, and realizing she may be doomed if she didn't do something, Storm flew outside into the catastrophic storm she had created. Understanding that unlike Thor, who controls the elements of nature by force, her abilities require working with those same elements. Thus, Storm attuned herself to them and soothed them into submission while simultaneously rejecting her internal desire to retain the link to such incredible power.

In the end, Storm triumphed over her own need for power and the limitless ability of nature. While her mutant powers are impressive, Storm's true strengths run much deeper. Recently in the X of Swords, she has shown that with or without powers she is a force to be reckoned with, as she has before.
