Namor's status as a mutant has always given him an interesting place among the X-Men. While he's nominally an ally to them, he's also fought against them on occasion -- and even had romances with some of them, like Emma Frost.

There's one major X-Man he was even technically married to -- although he can't remember it. The Age of X crossover resulted in a short-lived Storm and Namor romance that was so potentially dangerous, that both mutants willingly had their memories of the entire affair erased from their minds.

X-Men Storm Namor Age of X Romance 2

Age of X was a 2011 X-Men crossover that threw the mutant heroes of the Marvel Universe into the cataclysmic world of Earth-11326. In this timeline, anti-mutant sentiment became far more widespread -- spurned on by Jean Grey manifesting the power of the Phoenix within the city of Albany, wiping out 600,000 people. The US Government constructed far deadlier Sentinels, which quickly decimated the mutant population across the globe. With only a handful left on the planet, the survivors rallied around Magneto and his newly constructed Fortress X. As a result, many classic mutants were portrayed in very different lights -- such as a battle-weary Wolverine avoiding conflict, Rogue serving as a living memorial for the fallen, and Cyclops being used by Arcade as an execution weapon before he escaped captivity.

Among the remaining mutants was Storm, who in this timeline remained in Africa for far longer than she did in the core-Marvel Universe of Earth-616. In this timeline, she was regarded as a queen and a goddess -- fighting against the forces that threatened her and her disciples. At some point, she eventually encountered this world's version of Namor. The two royal mutants ended up falling in love, with Namor willingly leaving Atlantis behind to stand beside Storm in the growing global conflict. Even in the hellish landscape, their romance blossomed, with the pair eventually marrying. But things became complicated when the reality was reset at the end of the crossover -- and Storm and Namor realized that their alternate reality marriage meant Storm had technically been cheating on her then-husband, Black Panther.

X-Men Storm Namor Age of X Romance 3

X-Men Legacy #248 (by Mike Carey and Jorge Molina) dealt with the fallout of that storyline, and saw Utopia's psychics erase the memories of the timeline from anyone who wished them gone. This included Storm and Namor, who had the memory of their romance erased from their minds. Namor specifically cited his intentions to keep the peace between Wakanda and Atlantis as his main reason for this -- unaware that a short time later, the two nations would find themselves at war for different reasons.

Storm and Namor's largely off-panel romance was a surprising one, but one that makes sense. Both are strong-willed protectors and leaders, they would be the ideal couple. But circumstances never allowed them the chance to find each other -- and rather than further explore the possibility of that bond, the pair sought to dodge an international incident that could have caused serious strife in the superhero community. However, shortly after, the X-Men and Avengers came to blows in AvX, which ironically enough set Wakanda against Atlantis anyway following the Phoenix Namor's assault on the nation.

The revelation of this romance might have spurned that conflict to become even more heated, and in turn, could have set the stage for a genuine world war between Wakanda and Atlantis. In a universe where disagreements can easily escalate, it makes sense that Storm and Namor would want to forget their relationship -- even if it means the happiness they found together will vanish as a result.
