WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Marauders #20 by Gerry Duggan, Stefano Caselli, Edgar Delgado, Chris Sotomayor, Tom Muller and VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.
The X-Men have long been some of the most powerful and imposing heroes in all of the Marvel Universe. Ororo Munroe, the mutant as Storm, has even been revered as a literal god throughout her storied history, and she lives the part of an icon as well, battling both physical and ideological threats to mutantkind.
And while several X-Men trade their favorite Storm stories in Marauders #20, Marvel reveals how Storm sent the Hate-Monger himself into early retirement.
While sailing home to prepare for the upcoming Hellfire Gala, the Marauders exchange their favorite tales from their adventures with Storm, and Bobby Drake has the best one of all. He recalls the time that he and Storm caught up with the Hate-Monger in a back alley in Madripoor. It isn't quite clear which of them threw the first punch, but it was certainly Storm who threw the last, as the Hate-Monger quickly finds himself in a dumpster before being on the receiving end of an absolutely brutal beating. Of course, there are few villains who deserve such a devastating defeat, but Josh Glenn is most certainly one of them.
While there have been several villains to wear the hood of the Hate-Monger over the years, the most recent of them, as well as the last to have a run in with the Marauders, was Josh Glenn. This former white collar employee grew obsessed with the perceived slights at the hands of those he considered "others," and after discovering the message of the original Hate-Monger, Josh took up the mantle for himself. When he was first introduced in 2011's Black Panther: The Man Without Fear! #521 by David Liss and Francesco Francavilla, Josh Glenn even became possessed by the spirit of the original Hate-Monger before facing off against T'Challa himself alongside the twisted American Panther.
Most recently, however, the Hate-Monger was seen tormenting the Marauders in last year's Marauders #5 by Gerry Duggan, Matteo Lolli and Lucas Werneck. After being contracted by the anti-mutant group of former Hellfire Club Inner Circle members known as the Homines Verendi, Hate-Monger and X-Cutioner launched an assault on the Marauders' ship, nearly killing Pyro in the process. While the two were swiftly defeated, the distraction provided by their assault led to the perfect opening for Sebastian Shaw to assassinate Kate Pryde, something which was not forgotten by her vengeful teammates. When Iceman and Storm catch up to the Hate-Monger in the story that Bobby tells the rest of the crew, she is swift to break bones and leave him unable to fight back before returning to a far more diplomatic approach.
It isn't clear just what exactly Storm said to the Hate-Monger, but the impact of her words is more than obvious when the villain leaves his purple hood in the trash after the dust has settled. Aside from the fact that Storm was able to convince such a vile and deeply bigoted character to give up the symbol of his twisted ideology is more than astounding, and that she accomplished it without ever using her powers only further highlights just how capable she is on any battlefield. It's hard to imagine that there will come a threat or challenge that Storm will be left unable to overcome. Should that day ever arise, though, she will surely have more friends to back her up than she could even begin to count, and all because of her relentlessly understanding nature.
