The following article contains spoilers from Sins of Sinister #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Mister Sinister's latest plot is that it is predicated upon using existing flaws within the Marvel Universe to conquer the world. In truth, he merely took advantage of design flaws as well as personal prejudices and greed to conquer the world without anyone realizing it. In particular, Sins of Sinister #1 (by Kieron Gillen, Lucas Werneck, Geoffrey Shaw, Marco Checchetto, Juan Jose Ryp, David Baldeon, Travel Foreman, Carlos Gomez, Federico Vicentini, David Lopez, Joshua Cassara, Stefano Caselli, Bryan Valenza, and VC's Clayton Cowles) exposed just how hypocritical humanity is when it comes to mutants.

For decades, the majority of the human population has looked at mutants as a problem to either be ignored or outright destroyed. But, when Mister Sinister used his puppet council to offer free x-genes to everyone on the planet to give them immortality, countless people jumped at the chance to be a mutant. It exposes just how hollow their hatred truly is when dropping it benefits them, or worse, reveals that the only reason they hate mutants so much is that they want to be like them.

Mister Sinister's plan, while technically complex, was fairly simple. Krakoa would offer the world access to their resurrection technology, implanting temporary x-genes into humans to give them access to the technology. In reality, the genes would contain a copy of Sinister's mind that could then influence or take over the host body. What's terrifying is how many people leaped at the chance to have their own x-gene. Even when it was becoming apparent that the mutants were taking over, there were still lines outside the shop to get an x-gene.

It indicates that, for all their rhetoric about how mutants are a disease or some flaw in the genetic destiny of humanity, many of them would quickly become a mutant if the opportunity presented itself. Granted, the main reason to do so here was to gain immortality, but some of these people must have had a hardline anti-mutant stance and still went for it. All that rhetoric about being against anything mutant suddenly flew out the window when it appealed to their greed.

What makes this worse is that the majority of the bigotry against mutants stems from human beings simply being unable to get over themselves. Here exists a population of extraordinary people with incredible gifts, a good number of whom have saved the world more times than they can count, and all they can do is try to vilify and reject them. Even after providing life-changing medicine to the globe and lending the X-Men to continue protecting the world mutants are still not accepted in society.

To think that this is all based on simple jealousy is not only tragic but infuriating. Sins of Sinister proves that humanity's hatred of mutants is based on pure pettiness over what the citizens of Krakoa have achieved. If they could move past their egos and see the mutants for who they truly are, then Marvel's Earth-616 could be a better place, but that might be expecting too much from them.
