WARNING: The following contains spoilers from X-Men #7 by Gerry Duggan, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, and VC's Clayton Cowles, now on sale from Marvel Comics.

Since mutantkind found a new home and way of living on Krakoa, the Marvel Universe has been turned upside down. Now, as a viable world superpower with secrets few know about in and out of the community, they've inadvertently become a bigger target than ever before. But their most secretive superpower, resurrection, may also serve as the foundation for the largest conflict of heroes ever to take place in the Marvel Universe.

In X-Men #7, a new villain named Dr. Stasis has taken an extreme interest in the X-Men, more specifically their resurrection protocols. After the very public death of Cyclops, he was forced to go into hiding and exist under the assumed identity of Captain Krakoa to keep up appearances and avoid suspicions over his miraculous return. But in the moments leading up to his death and resurrection, a flaw was uncovered that might lead to a more significant issue in the future.

When mutants are resurrected, their memories are restored via a backup. As a result, anything they were told just before their deaths is lost. This happened when Dr. Stasis cornered a wounded Cyclops before killing him. As he bled out from a slashed throat, Stasis told Cyclops to meet him at a secret location. But since his resurrection, Cyclops knew nothing about the meeting. It seemed like a missed opportunity, but it actually revealed more about the resurrection systems to Dr. Stasis than anyone else has learned since.

Since Stasis showed up, leaks have been getting out, via Orchis, to reporters like Ben Urich that the X-Men had found a way to cheat death. Of course, with Dr. Stasis being a part of Orchis, secrets like this are something that they will stop at nothing to learn more about. But as more leaks emerge from Orchis, it's only a matter of time before such a monumental secret will likely create even more issues than ever before in the superhero community, both from an ethical and moral standing.

The upcoming event, Judgment Day, will see the mutants take on the Eternals and the Avengers for an unknown reason. That said, with resurrection being something the Eternals are used to and only just learned the truth of, the option to be reborn without trading the life of a human is more than enticing. As a result, they may try to seize the power that they have had for centuries for themselves. However, knowing the weight of loss and the dangers of living without consequence, the Avengers may see this as a larger problem and try to stop it entirely.

If the mutant's ability to cheat death is truly at the root of the conflict, then the concept of lost memories, which has been exploited before in Way of X by Si Spurrier and Robert Quinn, may become an even larger issue in the future. With lost time, between resurrections, enemies could use this to plant ideas, and allies could see the danger in their friends losing a part of themselves. In the end, the ethical debate could lead to conflict and the potential end of the mutant oasis that they've tried so hard to achieve.
