The following contains spoilers for X-Men Red #4, now on sale from Marvel Comics

The X-Men have found themselves in a unique position in recent years, with the Krakoa era forcing them further than they've ever been before. This has unsettled not just their enemies, but many established allies. Now, by doing something to help save countless lives across the galaxy, the X-Men may have crossed a major red line with one of the few major alliances they have left.

It seems like the X-Men have gotten far more involved in Shi'Ar affairs, resurrecting Xandra without informing them first in X-Men Red #4 (by Al Ewing, Juann Cabal, Andres Genolet, Michael Sta. Maria, Federico Blee, and VC's Ariana Maher) and it may cause some serious strife between the mutant nation and their most important space-based allies.

X-Men Red Shi'Ar War Storm 3

X-Men Red #4 dealt with fallout from Marauders #3, which saw the Kin Crimson turn against the Shi'Ar throne to hide crimes of the past. This extended to attacking Empress Xandra which was confirmed to be lethal. While the Marauders have been scrambling to deal with that, the psionic death-cry of Xandra reached Oracle. This caused the Shi'Ar representative to call a meeting with their intergalactic allies. As Oracle explained, Xandra's death could lead to a power struggle that could cost trillions of lives. But a possible solution lies with Krakoa who, due to Xandra's mutant status, could be resurrected her with the Five.

The council discussed the issue, with both sides making valid points and Nova agreed with the idea of resurrection to help. Orbis Stellaris of the Galactic Rim was concerned that by granting Xandra a stay from demise, they'll invite an "immortal dictator" to take the reins of one of the galaxy's most important empires. But it turned out the discussion was irrelevant, as Storm (in her role as a major leader of mutant-kind) revealed Krakoa was already trying to revive Xandra. Storm then casually ended the meeting reminding Orbis Stellaris that mutants need no "permission" to protect and restore their own.

X-Men Red Shi'Ar War Storm 1

It's an impressive moment for Storm, who has been showcasing her power as the Monarch of Sol. But it's one that carries a lot of potential for chaos. While the Guardians of the Galaxy's Nova agreed with Storm and even wants to relocate to Arakko to provide assistance (something Storm happily accepts), the other members of the alliance might be less inclined to see the meeting as productive. It likely pushed tensions between Krakoa and their allies in the Kree/Skrull Empire and Wakanda. It could also be construed as a slight to Orbis Stellaris, who is already working with Orchis to upend the growth of the mutant nation.

Perhaps most worryingly is the Shi'Ar Empire itself. At this point arguably the most stable of the Marvel Univere's most important alien races, the Shi'Ar are a force to be reckoned with. The X-Men's alliance with the Shi'Ar helped establish the X-Men's galactic ambitions. But if the Shi'Ar Empire does fall to in-fighting, the new powers in control could side with the Kin Crimson and turn against mutants.

Even if the current Shi'Ar government endures, they could see the resurrection of Xandra without even the courtesy of informing them first as a serious breach of trust. They could also fear the influence the mutants will now have over her. She was even only killed while on a mission with the Mauraders, and Krakoa could be blamed for her fate. This decision could bring a brief peace, only setting up one of the X-Men's most important galactic allies to see them less as friends and more as potential rivals.
